U.S. Embassy in Japan Gets Possible Threat

The U.S. Embassy said Wednesday it had received a possible threat against U.S. facilities in Japan and warned American citizens to be on guard against suspicious activities.

The embassy, which remained open for business on Wednesday, would not say how or when the threat had been received. Officials refused to specify what precautions had been taken.

American Embassy

The U.S. Embassy said Wednesday it had received a possible threat against U.S. facilities in Japan and warned American citizens to be on guard against suspicious activities.

It was later reported that an American citizen entered the U.S. Embassy, requested assistance.... AND ACTUALLY GOT IT!

Now THAT is suspicious!

Nah, that's impossible. Over the years, I've had other U.S. Embassies re-issue my stolen/lost passport over-night. One of our main FGs here just lost his passport last week and the slackers at Embassy Tokyo are saying it will take TWO fucking weeks.

Now Taro!

Now, now, Taro, don't you think you're being a little harsh? I mean realistically how can you expect them to do a rush job when they have to take both American and Japanese holidays off.

Think how much STREEEESS that would put on them.

Went on a Thursday afternoon to get a new passport made and they said it would tale like 2-3 weeks. The following Monday around noon they called me up and said the passport was ready. This was Feb. '05.

And they only got 1 threat? I bet they feel ignored.

Post 9/11 and realizing there had been multiple cases where scores of blank replacement passports had been stolen from embassies and general abuse of replament passports by some (previoulsy replacement passports were as good a regular passports...Bobby Fisher traveled under a replacement passport for 6 years before he got snagged at Narita), the State department revamped the whole process (last fall I think) and put significant limits on replacement passports (replacements now can only be good for a max of a year and may be set for much shorter periods of time (ie, 10 days) and they have to be surrendered in order to get a new “real” passport back in the USA, although I don't think they need to pay again to get new one). I'm not positive about this, but I think they actually send back to the US to get the replacement passports nowadays, while previously they had stacks of blank ones at the embassies themselves could issue...for time sensitive emergencies, I believe the embassies can issue one time use documents for direct return to the US. As it is, the Tokyo embassy website says it normally takes 3-4 weeks to get a replacement passport.

The Embassy used to be able to issue new passports on the spot. But three, maybe four years ago they stopped. Now they have to be sent from the states. Philadelphia I believe..

It's part of the new tamper proof passport design and they only have the machines to print them in the US.

Back to the threat. I wish they would give out some more information on this like what to look out for. I mean is it a group of short, fat guys wearing Nikes? Radical Muslims? Christian Rightwingers? Dykes on Bikes?
