I'm here in the U.S. and I am watching CNN (not headline news. the main CNN) and there is video on about the fire and saying that 138 are dead and 160 are missing. The newscaster is a Korean woman, but all the video has Japanese words on it.

Authorities became more suspicious after examining Ishiguro's passport which included stamps from Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and Pakistan.

Japan's Transport Ministry has inspected the subway system in Tokyo to beef up safety and fire prevention measures in the wake of a South Korean subway fire which killed 124 people.

Japan authorities inspect Tokyo subway system

They demonstrated how to manually open the subway doors on the news tonight:

The small, red levers are in different locations on different trains. I've seen them below the seats, right next to the doors themselves.

The lever they showed on the news was located about 1.5 meters up from the floor, on the very front or back wall of each car; where the cars are connected. The lever is behind a small door closed with a finger screw.

Open the door, pull the lever. This let's out the compressed air in the hydraulic system, enabling people to open the doors with their hands.

Note to self: Make mental note of emergency lever before dozing off.

No one has died in a train fire in this country since 1972, when 30 people in a sleeping car suffocated after a fire broke out in the dining car of a train belonging to the then Japanese National Railways. The train was passing through a tunnel on the Hokuriku Line in Fukui Prefecture at the time.
