Now for sumthin' different.. (stupid Mac OS question)

Today one of my Mac mice circa 2001 died, so I bought a Mighty Mouse for Macs (functionally it's a 4 button mouse). This mouse requires Apple OS 10.4x aka " OS X Tiger", but I only have OS 10.3.9 "Panther". Does anybody know if the upgrade for OS 10.5 is coming soon.
Question: Does anybody have an idea when OS 10.5 might be coming out? Sept??

My guess (and these are guesses since nobody except Steve Jobs really knows for sure when it will ship)

10.5 will probably not be released in the fall of 2006. The Apple WorldWide Developers Conference in August is still describing their 10.5 sessions as previews. I suspect it will ship November/December at the earliest, but more likely early 2007. It may be released at the same time as Apple's new Mac Pro CPUs, it would be hard for Apple if they didn't ship those before the year end, but I'm guessing they won't (or if they do, they barely make it before Jan 1). Apple doesn't have a huge reason to ship new pro CPUs when the pro software everyone wants (Adobe CS3) won't be ready until 2007.

But more to the point of your problem, it was my understanding that the Mighty Mouse didn't require 10.4, that version has the drivers built in, but you can install drivers to make it work for 10.3. Didn't you get a CD with the mouse? If all else fails, you could use USB Overdrive as a 3rd party software driver, I use it on my Logitech mouse, it's much better than the crappy official Logitech drivers.

All the guys at the Apple Store Ginza had fits and ran around circles like their wangers were on fire when I told them I was going to use the Mighty Mouse together with OS 10.3.9. The Mouse manual says the CD with the drivers "requires Mac X10.4.2 or newer."

However, the 360 scroll ball/knob works just fine as does the select text for services function (spell check). And of course, Mighty Mouse functions like regular Mac mouse. I was planning on waiting until OS 10.5 is released rather than paying them for OS 10.4 now and then paying again for 10.5 in the late summer/fall. Thanks for your confirmation/questimation about that fall release of 10.5.

I hope you don't mind me posting in this thread, but why not just compile your own drivers and modules for this. The beauty of running an OS like this is that you can compile everythign yourself and get things running is it not? I am a Linux nut and Certified to boot.

I hope that you would at least give it a whirl, these sorts of things are out there to test way before they are 'officially' released.

I used the mighty mouse that came with my iMac G5 for a while but got a bit sick of it so now Im using a standard optical Microsoft mouse.

...for a little more money you should have gone for something like a Logitech MX1000 (new model is the G7 I think) - its what I use with my PC - theyre sweet.

I use the MX510 as I prefer corded mice, but I also have a G5 and a MX1000, the G5 is nice , very light weight, the MX1000 being wireless I find it to be a little slow with latency, though the lazer is a good gimic to annoy my supervisor, who is a self confessed lazer nut..
