Im curious as to how much info Japanese Immigration/ a potential employer in Japan is actually able to obtain. Dont privacy laws in the US, and other countries, make it difficult for them??

I can see them having certain degree mills or whatever blacklisted but what if someone has a "replacement degree" (like what sillygirl mentions above) from a reputable brick and mortar uni?

Japanese Immigration are retards as they ask for you for your actual diploma not your official (sealed) transcript. Please prove me wrong but J-Immigration seems to only check for criminal records and very randomly looks at validity of diplomas if at all. If you ever get in trouble with the law here, then J-Immigration will check and deport you for a fake diploma.

Japanese companies do check the diploma of upper-ranking hires---Engrish teachers they ignore, but potential managers claiming to have an MBA/Phd, they do a background check unless the candidate already has a huge portfolio or major experience in the industry. Since you want to "break into" a new field, you will be investigated since you don't have a track record in the industry.

Bottom Line: At Hitachi, we only investigated the diplomas for gaijin getting better jobs---crap jobs for noobs weren't checked.

I know of 5 people in the small city I lived in who used their Bangkok degrees. I can't imagine immigration phoning a university to check:

Uni: "Good afternoon, naninani university"

Immigration bloke: "eh, to, nanda ke"

LOL

that more or less settles the question IMO

Btw, what other documents does one have to submit with a university degree when applying for a certificate of elegibility? do you need to provide your high school diploma as well?

Nope but you do need a contract from your employer. Plus a copy of your passport.

I really don't mind answering these visa questions as I know the frustration from the lack of information available on the web. It is really a case of learn by trial and error.

Personally I think that immigration would be a much easier place for the staff there if they provided more user friendly information so that people could be better prepared before they showed up.. it seems to me that everytime I go there are so many people who haven't a clue and it is not their faults as there is such poor disemination of the requirements for each type of visa.

well if you're up to answering questions, I have another for you :)

what is the step by step proecedure for getting a work visa once you have found an employer willing to sponsor you? I know the general outline but I don't have a clue about the specifics. I guess that the employer would provide you with the forms you need to fill in for the certificate of elegibility. Once they are filled in (with help from the employer) you take them to the immigration office with your degree and a company of the employment contract...then what happens there?

Strike 1: Nope, ain't no such detailed animal, because Japan does not have many immigration laws, only a ton of secret administrative guidelines.

Strike 2: Your employer may not provide anything.

Foul Ball: Only J-Immigration can provide you with the "official list" of the EXACT items they want from you on a Case-by-Case basis.

First read everything on the useless official [url=http://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/]visa information website of Japan&#8217]

Next, you should check the Consular Section of the Embassy or Consulate General of Japan nearest you for more information and advice on how Japanese laws are applied on a phase-of-the-moon basis.

You will need to go to the immigration and pick up the forms if your employer doesn't have them. (If you are not in Japan then somebody has to go out to pick them up for you... they are the forms for the Certificate of Eligibilty)

Fill them in and take them to the immigration office (Again)

Wait for CoE to arrive. Somebody has to head out to the immigration to pick them up or they may be posted.

The CoE then needs to be posted to you and you submit to your Japanese consulate or Embassy with your passport and your visa is put into your passport.

Arrive in Japan.

Get Gaijin card.

Go back out to immigration to get your Re-entry permit.

Work visa may be easier than a spouse visa.
My company sent from Japan to Singapore for four years and during that time my spouse visa expired. Before returning to Japan my wife didn't want to have to get all the paperwork to do another spouse visa so for the 1st time I got a work visa sponsored by my company.
It was easy. I think I needed the form, contract and letter of introduction from company, and passport.
The embassy processed the visa in about a week if I remember.
They issued a CoE in Singapore. Upon returning I had to go get my Gaijin card and rentry permit as GG mentioned.

Anyone know if I can get a fake degree in Thailand for a medical school?
Always wanted to try my hand at brain surgery. I've got an awsome tool kit:)

I was mistakenly introduced as Dr Taro once when visiting Todai Med School's orthopedics department with an FG doctor friend who was doing his residence there. I went on grand rounds and the whole thing and consulted on various skeletal isssues. Great fun.
The Todai geniuses never questioned why I kept on talking about "cause of death" and "evidence of" rather symptoms or treatment. Finally the youngest Todai med student asked about my latest patients and my FG doctor friend couldn't keep a straight face any longer. He broke out laughing and said most of my latest patients had been dead for 100 years. That because I was a physical anthropologist Phd candidate working on Native American remains (and previously had been a coroners assistant). :hehe:
