World Cup 2006

Postby canman » Sat May 06, 2006 9:27 pm

Does anybody know if the World cup games are going to be on Skyperfec this time round. In 2002 all games were broadcast free on 4 channels with English and perhaps even spannish and of course Japanese play by play. I went to the SP page and it looked like you need this new skapa 110. If its free great if not I don't mind buying a worl cup package as long as its reasonable and they show all the games with English commentary. I guess its not asking for much is it.
Anybody have any predictions, other than Zico Japan is going out in the first round, and I will love it. DOn't get me wrong I like the boys in blue, I just don't like Zico and don't feel he is a good coach, and it will take a thumping at the world cup to wake people up to the fact.

While it wouldn't surprise me, the other thing NHK may do is not show the games live, but on tape delay, or wait until the middle of the night to show them or something bitchy like that.
There is a wild discussion going on at Crisscross about how some foreigners in Japan hope that the Japanese team will lose in the first round etc. Its quite fun reading if you have a half hour to kill.
I'm trying to get a group of people together to go out and watch the first game on the 12th of June, I think watching it with a group sharing a few pints will make the game all the more exciting. Anybody else have any plans for the first game?
All you Aussies have it made if your home team wins you can celebrate, if Japan wins you can still celebrate. Mind you what I've heard of Aussies they don't really need anything to celebrate to have a good time, right?

I don't think they will do that because they pay a whole lot of money upfront for the rights to broadcast. In '98 and'02 after Japan went out as far as my sleep deprived barain can remember they didn't change the schedule.

Anybody else have any plans for the first game?

Could make it a double header. the Japan-Aus game starts at 10 and the US-Czech game starts at 1. Make it a drunken all nighter.

You may be right GB

Postby canman » Thu May 18, 2006 6:57 pm

Have you noticed that since a certain Mr. Hideki Matsui went down with a wrist injury, the New York Yankees have fallen off the face of the earth, or at least here in Japan. I thought for sure that BS would continue to show the games, as they have probably already paid for them, but no, no Matsui no games.
So if Japan goes out in the first round as some have predicted(but not these experts"Experts say Japan a chance to pass World Cup group stage") we may not be able to see as many games as hoped. I know you might say but they have a schedule etc. but I don't think that would stop NHK from jettisoning the whole package if the boys in blue lose early.
Here is the link to that great article

Only problem is the experts are all from Japan but probably no different than any other country.
Reminds of right before WC2002 I was riding the train and there were 20ish girls talking and the conversation went something like this:

Girl 1: Have you heard about this World Cup thing coming up?
Girl 2: Yeah, I don't know much about it but on TV they said we are supposed to finish at least 4th.

I almost fell out my my seat laughing. On second thought maybe they were Korean. ;)

Yellow Tang and Blue Palett Surgeon fish pick fishbait packed ball, looking like playing soccer on a football field shaped fishtank at the Hakkeijima Sea Paradise aquarium in Yokohama, suburban Tokyo. If the forecasts are to be believed, Japan's players in next month's World Cup are small fish in a big pond.

Just got the skyperfectv June booklet

Postby canman » Fri May 19, 2006 4:10 pm

And they say they will show all 64 games. Then in very fine print the say that none of the games will be live. Now I don't know if that means tape delay, or does it mean that they will be showing the US Czech game on July 4th. Kind of like they are doing now with the WBC, they are still showing games played in February. So I guess its NHK, or nothing.

If I remember correctly before they would show the game live on BS1 then would rebroadcast on NHK general if the game started at like 3AM or during daytime hours M-F when most folks are working.

Maybe they are trying to leave themselves some room to be flexible. Example: Brazil will likely have won the group after the 2nd game so they wouldn't broadcast their 3rd game live (assuming it is not against Japan) if their was another group game at the same time in which the 3rd game will decide the group (Italy0Mexico 2002). But if Brazil for some reason slipped up and needed a win and a point margin to get out of the group then I think that game would have priority.

I still think if Japan gets blown out in the first two games and looks sure of elimination, the coverage will be dramatically decreased, if not cease to happen. They have done that in the past and it is simply if there is no NIPPON MERIT, don't show it!

SkyPerfect, not so perfect

Postby soccerfan » Thu Jun 01, 2006 10:03 pm

I received a used SkyPerfect antenna & tuner from my landlord. I was hoping that this would be all that I needed to get SkyPerfect service. However, apparently I need a new IC card, which apparently I can only get by buying a new tuner. I went to Joshin today to buy one, and the salesperson said he could only sell me the antenna & tuner combo, not the tuner by itself. What kinda crock of shit is that?! Does anyone know where I can buy a tuner by itself in the Kyoto area? I'm willing to go as far as Osaka if I have to. Any help would be much appreciated!

Great

Postby canman » Sat Jun 10, 2006 8:47 am

Just as I thought, NHK will not broadcast the games in English. I was hoping they would provide the subchannel soundtrack, but alas, they didn't. Also I can see that Skyperfectv's coverage is wanting. Even though they have stated they will show all 64 games, they will show their first one, the Poland Ecuador game starting at 2:30pm. Well by that time its almost impossible to not know the score of the game. With all the crawling headlines one CNN and BBC, its impossible not to know the scores. Oh well, can only wait for the England game tonight. Just hope they don't have some sucky announcer who will only focus on Beckham.

Sounds to me like that guy was trying to flog your flopper. Most major electronics stores should sell them separately. I bought one for a besso and they didn't have the antenna set or setup that I wanted, so I just bought the tuner there. J-stores always have sets for everything, but I don't recall them telling me I must buy one, cause althought I mentioned I was interested in an antenna, I was only going to buy the tuner.

I don't know, I wouldn't think that it's changed that much in a couple of years, but you never know about J-land.

I think

Postby canman » Sat Jun 10, 2006 10:06 am

You can buy the tuner seperately, but you will pay more. I wanted a second tuner for my house and went to Yamada Denki where they were having a special deal, tuner and antenna for only Y5000. I asked if I could only buy the tuner and they said no, it was a set at that price. If I just wanted the tuner it would cost Y19000. The catch for the Y5000 you had to sign up for a new contract, so it was being subsidized by SP. If you really want to watch the World Cup on Skyperfectv then buy the new set and get a new contract, I think that is the easiest and cheapest way.

I don't see while all you FGs may want to watch the World Cup, when the game possibly originated in Japan. I haven't seen anything further on this, but rest assured, if the J-media gets into it, we will seen the advent of articles on the unique way in which Japanese soccer is properly played in its original pure form, compared to what the barbarians in the west have done to this unique J-sport!

"...Soccer The War Game! Looking Back To Its Origin
Saturday, June 10.

Believe it or not, but the modern day soccer owes its origin to the barbarous war mongering nature of human beings.

There is no proper documentation that can state the date and place of origination of the most popular modern day sport soccer. However, depending on the socio-historical facts and data we can assume that some type of a ball game was played somewhere in this planet for at least over 3000years now.

The earliest evidence of soccer was found in Kyoto, Japan where a field marked to play a ball-kicking game was found...."

Wonderful how there is no citation. There is a ball game that dates back to the 700's that is still played by Shinto Priests called Kemari which I have seen played at Kotohira Shrine. I would hardly call it soccer.

http://www.expertfootball.com/history/soccer_history_far_east.php

When anyone tells you the origin of anything in Japan is before 500 A.D. they are probably bullshiting as there is no historical documentation.

Ahh, but Dimmer, you're not a unique member of a unique culture with a unique history, so you as a low-born FG wouldn't be capable of understanding and appreciating a unique sport that has originated in a unique country!

They'll probably be running mini-series's on NHK every week concerning soccer's new found roots, from here on out if Nihon daihyou scores one goal in the cup (which is by no ways a sure thing)!
