North Korean Fighter Sparks Alert

The North Korean MiG-19 flew past the northern limit line over the Yellow Sea near South Korea's Yongpyong Island.

Officials in Seoul say they do not yet know what sparked the incursion -whether it was a deliberate incursion or a simple navigational error.

I like the 'classic' look of the MiGs.

The flat nose makes it look like a flying tube. Does Russia and China still use them? They look a little dated.

DATED?! I'm offended. Hell, they were designed by my cousins at the Mikoyan Design Bureau when I was born!

The current US workhorse, the B-52, is the same age and, "Current engineering analyses show the B-52's life span to extend beyond the year 2045" which is about what as persons my age would like to hope for.

BTW: most of the J-6 (MiG-19) fighters retired from active service 2002 Chinese Defence Today.

India still uses the MiG 19 with Chinese mods and help. However, the Russian MiG-19 -- first serial supersonic fighter of the USSR's airforce--- is out of service.
