Kamome hit by pitch

The Bisons were batting in the bottom of the eleventh when a seagull flew between the pitcher's mound and home plate just as Durham's pitcher released the ball.

OK, dumb story, but I couldn't resist. ;)

A few years ago Randy Johnson three a pitch to home plate and at the same time a bird flew into its path and was just oblitereated by the fast ball. You could just see a ball of feathers and then nothing.

League officials ruled on the call and the decision was that since the seagull was close enough to a lawyer and could be so classed, the pitcher received an outstanding performance award and a free drink ticket to an English pub in Kamiyacho!

Given that it's an English pub in Kamiyacho of all places (and that we're dealing with a bird here), one could say that the pitcher got the "booby" prize!

You're right! Here's a link to the story from 2001.

During the seventh inning of the Diamondbacks' split-squad 10-6 victory against the Giants on Saturday, the NL Cy Young winner hit and killed a dove flying in front of home plate.

Johnson's pitch to the Giants' Calvin Murray was about three-fourths of the way to home plate when it struck the bird. The bird flew over catcher Rod Barajas' head and landed a few feet from the plate amid a sea of feathers.

In the same article, it says that Dave Winfield killed a seagull with a warmup throw in 1983.

In 1983, while playing in Toronto, Dave Winfield hit a seagull after warming up in the outfield before the bottom of the fifth inning. He was throwing the ball back in to the batboy when it hit the seagull. After the game he was arrested by the Toronto police for cruelty to animals -- the charges were dropped the next day.

3 years ago, a minor league pitcher named Jae Kuk Ryu hit and killed Ozzy the Osprey, one of a pair of osprey (named Ozzie and Harriet) who lived near Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona, Florida. The bird was perched on a light tower at the ballpark, and Ryu, after a number of attempts, hit and killed Ozzie with a ball -- although, he said he wasn't trying to kill it. He also was arrested and was charged with harming a protected bird.

Here's a linkto a look at those and other incidents involving animals and sports.
