Sadly, there is a perception in Japan of foreigners being second-rate (i.e., they came to Japan because they couldn't succeed in their own country). There is a similar feeling among certain people in the U.S. Never mind that Japan is a huge, sophisticated market.

Btw, Mulboyne, I read some of that article (didn't have time to read the whole interview). Philippi was an amazing individual. Very much ahead of his time.

Probably had too much to drink and placed too much trust in a poorly-constructed balcony. Anybody know where in Tokyo this happened? :?:

I suspect it is because the railings are only built high enough to keep the average 5' 2" Asian from falling over, and aren't high enough to keep your average 6' 2" Westerner from tumbling to their death.

That's a good point Charles, I've actually noticed that in the older Japanese buildings and thought how easy it would be to fall over them, while attaching something like a antenna or dish on the railing. Some of them, are out and out deadly!

Also, speaking from experience, it is not wise, regardless of the height of the railing, to get in a Judo match with a pissed-off J-wife while on a balcony. It's amazing what those cute little rice cookers can do in a fit of white rage!

Michael Bartosh MacIT Scholarship Fund
Macworld Conference and Expo Faculty member Michael Bartosh passed away on June 11, 2006. An in-demand consultant and author, Michael was just 28 when he passed away while in Tokyo on a consulting assignment designing the server strategy for an international client. One of our highest rated technical instructors Michael was a brilliant technologist with an enthusiasm to engage everyone in earshot in his technical discussions. Widely respected as *the* guy with regards to Directory Services technical acumen, his book on Panther Server Administration has been regarded as the defacto bible for Mac admins. Michael was an incredibly interesting person to talk to - eclectic, opinionated, and passionate. He was a "gentle" trainer - very patient and eager to share his immense knowledge, yet one of those guys you really needed to be prepared to debate. He was also an avid live music fan with tastes tending to Robert Earl Keen and Johnny Cash.

Our community has lost not only a brilliant mind, but a true personality who added to every classroom he led, and every speaker office he held court in. We are setting up a scholarship in Michael's name for a network engineering student to come to MacIT and hopefully spark their imagination to carry Michael's torch and build the seamless, easy to use networks that enable people to communicate he was so passionate about.

The story about the gaijin falling off the roof of Gas Panic gets recycled every few years. Unless you can get some serious details (or blood stains on the concrete) I'd just ignore it.

Navy officials Wednesday declared Airman Jason J. Doyle, originally from Utah, as lost at sea and presumed dead. Doyle, 19, fell from the deck of the USS Kitty Hawk on July 8, at around 4:49 p.m. He was on duty at the time, Navy Lt. Cmdr. John Bernard said in an e-mail response to questions. Doyle fell during routine flight operations in the Philippine Sea off the east coast of Japan...more...

From an earlier report:
The USS Kitty Hawk had recently been docked in Otaru, where Doyle enjoyed learning Japanese and making friends with residents.

That's a really sad way to go.

And if he fell all the way from the flight deck - that's reported to be 61.3 m (201 ft) above the waterline- he probably wasn't in good shape after hitting the water.

Yeah. That was my old ship. There were 2 guys that bet each other that they couldn't jump and they did. One had a concussion and the other one broke something. As a sailor, it really is a hard life at sea. I could only imagine what he was doing at the time. It's easy and hard to fall off the ship. Depends on the circuimstances. I'll have to wait and see what those were and I will report them back to ya'll.

Vietnamese student killed in Japan

Vietnam News Agency wrote:
A 21-year-old Vietnamese student at a school in Chiba prefecture, Japan, was killed Monday, said the Vietnamese embassy in Tokyo.
The embassy was informed of Nguyen Trung Hieu's death by the Meisei Institute of Cybernetics in Chiba prefecture where he was studying.

Hieu, born in 1985 in northern Bac Ninh province, came to Japan in April 2004 to study Japanese language before becoming a student at the Meisei Institute.

Hieu's father, Nguyen Van Huong, told a Vietnam News Agency reporter in Bac Ninh province that his son was stabbed to death the morning of August 14 by a friend who had a quarrel with him.

Details of the case are still emerging, as the investigation by Japanese police continues.

With friends like that, who needs enemies?

VietnamNet: Murderer of Vietnamese student in Japan arrested
Police in Chiba province, Japan have arrested Pham Minh Quan, who killed student Nguyen Trung Hieu in his apartment in Matsudo City, Chiba on August 13. Pham Minh Quan was a student at the Akatsuki Nihongo Gakuin school in Satama, but he quit school to illegally work and live outside...Nguyen Hai Chau, who witnessed the murder, said that he worked with Hieu and Quan at a meal supply company. According to Chau, on the evening of August 12, Hieu and Quan quarreled at the work site. On the morning of August 13, Chau and two other men who worked at the same company as Quan and Hieu saw Quan stab Hieu in the chest. They brought Hieu to the hospital but the wound was too serious. However, Quan has not yet admitted that he killed Hieu.

Japanese police have asked the family of Hieu to quickly decide whether they wish to have the body brought to Vietnam or incinerated in Japan and then have the ashes brought to Vietnam to avoid further expenses in preserving the body. The Vietnamese Embassy in Japan has combined with local police to facilitate the investigation. Meanwhile, Japanese police are investigating and searching for the murderer of a Vietnamese girl, Le Thi Ly, in Aichi province.

Almost like an after thought, they mention this poor gal was murdered in anouther prefecture.

No mention of it in other media as they are two busy announcing every detail of the life and times of Mr. and Mrs. Kanno who were unfortunate to have selected Conair for their natsu yasumi and although not murdered, were Japanese.

TOKYO --
Police have obtained an arrest warrant for the 31-year-old son of former Colombian ambassador to Japan on suspicion of killing a 34-year-old American man in Yoyogi Park in Tokyo, sources familiar with the case said Monday. Police on Monday also raided the residence of the 57-year-old former ambassador in Shibuya Ward where the former ambassador lived with the son, the sources said....more...

Mulboyne wrote:Yomiuri: Drug connection eyed in slaying of American
The death of an immigrant whose body was found in a Yoyogi Park toilet last month was likely linked to drug trafficking, police said Monday. The Metropolitan Police Department found cannabis resin and stimulant drugs in the man's condominium in Minato Ward, Tokyo, leading them to form the hypothesis. The 34-year-old victim, whose name is being withheld by The Yomiuri Shimbun, is an American with permanent residency status who has lived in Japan for about 10 years. An autopsy revealed the man had used cocaine, the MPD said. At about 1:10 p.m. on April 12, a 74-year-old man found the American's body lying on the floor of a public lavatory in the park, located in Shibuya Ward. The senior told the police that, on his way into the toilet, he had passed a man who appeared to be non-Japanese. The MPD says it suspects this person stabbed the American to death. The American's cell phone and wallet were not on his person. The victim was stabbed twice with a sharp blade, including once in his throat, the MPD said. He had been seen often in restaurants and bars in Roppongi, a district popular among foreigners in Tokyo. The police have questioned shopkeepers there in the belief the man might have been involved in drug trafficking.

Mainichi: Russian dancer stabbed to death by cabaret club customer in Kobe

Itar-Tass: Japan police arrest killer of Russian girl
Police of the Japanese down of Kobe arrested on Thursday the killer of Russian girl Anastasia Shelepanova, immediately after his discharge from hospital, where he had convalesced from self-inflicted wounds. He fully confessed to the crime, police said, and the questioning is continuing to find out the motives behind the crime...She was killed in the night cabaret Academy in central Kobe, a large port in western Japan, shortly before midnight on August 16. Police said one of the guests, Mutsuru Yasuoka, 47, called her to his table, and when the girl, apologizing, made to leave, grabbed her hand and stabbed her several times to the head and chest with an army knife. He then shouted "Now I'll answer for it," and stabbed himself three times in the stomach. Unconscious, he was hospitalized and underwent surgery

Interesting comment in this piece about Russian girls who become hostesses:
Some girls, especially those from low-income families, are quite happy with their life, because clients often give them gold pieces and other expensive gifts, as it is prestigious to have a personal hostess -- it underscores one's high position in the society. In many cases, however, employers take away girls' passports, treat them without much regard for their rights, exploit them mercilessly, pay meager fees and often force them into prostitution.
I read here that the mudered girl was formerly a student at a top Russian ballet academy.

A 33-year-old woman who was with him in the house in Tokyo's Minato Ward was also arrested on suspicion of drug possession, they said.
Police said they are investigating how the two obtained the drug.
