Sick pay

Postby cerephinna » Fri Jun 16, 2006 6:41 pm

Hello

I'm gathering information in order to make an informed choice about applying to eikaiwas.
My query is, if you have to take time off work sick does the school pay you sick pay, or is that paid out of your health insurance, or do you not get paid anything for the time you take off sick?

Also what sort of 'common' afflictions are deemed reasonable for taking time off sick? Ie flu, tonsillitis, migraine, etc.

Thanks

PS - I did use the search function for information on this subject but found nothing. If you can link me to an existing thread discussing this subject that would be great :)

All I know is I got 5, yes, a whole 5 days off sick a year from my eikaiwa.

Caught a LOT of colds teaching germ riddled kids (with their flourescent green snot).

Called in hungover.

Called in bored.

Sorry I can't be of more use. Basically I worked for a woman called Mitsu who we dubbed 'Mitler'. If we were off sick over the 5 days, no pay for you, gaijin scum!!!

(When she came up the stairs we'd all hum the darth vadar type music : dum dum de dum dum de dum dum de dum)

That sounds similar to some of the call-centres I've worked at in the UK, they'd pay for about 3 days sick and nothing after that. Some others paid nothing.
I gather I'll need to be prepared with lots of painkillers and cold remedies and not take time off unless I'm seriously ill.

Thanks again.

It seems to me and other gaijin friends that the colds you catch in Japan were way harsher than the ones back home!

And more frequent, but again, blame the snotty students.

Have to say, though, Japanese cold medicine is pretty good stuff too, especially the stuff you get from the hospitals. Cost an arm or maybe a leg, though. Medical insurance is your friend.

Call centres in UK? Thought they'd all move to Dehli.

That has to be one of the best nicknames for a Japanese School owner that I have ever heard.

I only worked at the ones who were too small and couldn't afford to move to Delhi ;)
