What do you guys do in Japan?

Postby sachi » Sat Feb 22, 2003 12:48 pm

It seems that most of you people live in Japan. Someday I want to live there (maybe for a couple years, or more) and I was wondering how you guys came upon the opportunity to go to Japan and what you work as??

Thanks so much!!

In Japanese many words are taken from English. They just minpronounce him. What he is trying to say is that he is a retired "pool boy."

Currently, though, he cleans toilets.

Thanks for asking!

In a Nutshell

I noticed you didn't mention your career, Jinx boy.

Or, you could go through the 'member list' and check out the website address they give:

Sometimes it's good to introduce your own career before asking other's what they do. It's like asking, "How much money do you make?" to a stranger.. Remember this board is called 'F*ckedGaijin' for various reasons.

I have 3 types of work:
1 - Consistent cash: teach children English; teach grandmas English; tutor rich high school kids.

2 - Free-lance: videographer; video editor; graphic designer; web designer; video jockey (VJ); AV subtitler; computer consultant.

3 - Hobby/Jobs (I call Jobbies): network administrator; modelling agent; fashion reporter; trade-show reporter; janitor; masseur.. (in order of frequency)

Since coming to Japan I've managed to start eight companies. All of which have done very well more or less. Eventually I either worked my way out of going to the office (by demoting myself) or sold out to my then partners or other companies in the same field. I've owned a bar, two dance clubs, car import business, IT consultancy, fitness club and have been involved in a variety of smaller ventures.

I've made and lost a whole load of money many times. I had a lot of fun on the way and made a lot of friends. I also went mad doing.

A few years back (I'm told) I started acting a little bit more strange than that which is expected of gaijin in Japan. Eventually I was diagnosed as a Schizotypal Personality

I'm very lucky in that my wife and her family are really supportive and the local hospital 'shrink' actually believes in more that 'kusuri' therapy.

When you ask what I do in Japan. My answer is I'm trying to get my mind back.

I'm not sure the F**** G**** website is the place to do it but you've got to have a hobby right :D

gomichild - wow I looked at your website and I'm so amazed. You're gorgeous and how far you got is so admirable. ^_^

Sorry people, I didn't mean to sound so rude in my post. Right now I'm in university, studying Biology. I don't have a job. I guess I should do a little more research before I start asking you guys questions all of a sudden.

guyJean: thanks for the links and the info! It was really helpful!

There are a few options. Depends how much of a scientist you are.

PhDs can very easily get Japanese sponsored Post doc fellowships here. Most of them seem to come from third world countries (India, Bangladesh, China, New Zealand  ). Moneywise it's good. Careerwise, that may depend on what country you want to end up working in, I believe it's easier to get work in America if you have done a post doc there.

If you're a BSc, then you'll probably take the English teaching route. You're a native speaker and it's a very achievable way to live in Japan for a few years. Every man and his dog seems to be doing it though, I don't think the money is as good as it used to be.

However, since you're in the biological sciences, you're likely to be much more of a babe than your chemistry counterparts. There's always the ruder and cruder way to make a buck in Japan. 8O

What do you guys do in Japan?

Postby Kent Brockmann » Mon Feb 24, 2003 11:38 am

Kent Brockmann here. Megalomaniacal Mastodon of The Midway.

Here is a brief rundown of what I do in Japan.

-I pee a lot.

-I play my fuzzy warbles. Now it`s the Violent femmes, next up is tear it up`s "nothing to nothing" lp. Godspeed the vortex.

-Like most of the f___d gaijin here, I am gainfully employed as a performing seal.

Just quietly, I am working on bringing my Ebonics up to scratch in order to participate more fully on this message board. "G".

"Word up to the mother, I shall take you to the rack and flush you on the money".

Maybe not. I`m sorry. The loathsome Lothario thing...it`s... it`s just not me.

wow, I never expected to get so many helpful replies.

ramchop - thx for the help. I'm actually only a freshman right now, but I want to become an optometrist or a veterinarian. Biology majors are babes?? lol where'd you get that from ^_~ btw, do you have any links that I could look at for more info on what you're talking about??

I also teach piano. But for now, I'm trying to get my Japanese up to par. I practice with my great-aunt sometimes and her Okayama-ben is hard for me to comprehend sometimes...Oh yeah, I'm half Japanese. But my Japanese sucks.

That's not exactly what I said. It was a relative thing, and if you consider the talent of the chemistry sect who I'm accustomed to then it's no great compliment. However, I am fortunate enough to be stationed in a microbiology lab, there are one or two here that are very easy on the eye.

btw, do you have any links that I could look at for more info on what you're talking about??

Which of the 3 options was I talking about? Post doc (do a search on JSPS), English teaching (I'm sure there are many more qualified than me to help out), hostessing (no idea sorry)

Well, if you play the piano

Postby Gaisaradatsuraku! » Mon Feb 24, 2003 2:02 pm

If you play the piano you may be able to get part time jobs that actually pay pretty well teaching. I had a former girlfriend who did that and she did excellent. Of course she was Japanese and graduated from a good music school so parents would use her because they were confident the kids would be learning something that could get them into a good high school/colleage.

I can't say more than this but maybe you don't need to be Japanese to teach piano.

hhhmm ramchop be careful, I was a chemistry major (organic synthetic chem) at university!! And everybody knows I am a babe!! 8)

I left the labs after a few years as I kept blowing up the lab and myself.. one day I will realise the NaH and H2O are not good together..

But to Sachi - there seems to be as many varients in careers for the FG as there are in their "home" countries. I have met doctors, lawyers, teachers (english converstation and regular school), musicians, programmers, translators, artists, designers, bankers, actors, strippers, waiters, chefs, speech therapists, psychologists, writers, film-makers etc etc etc. I hope you get the idea.

We all whinge and complain at times about being a FG but if I have learnt anything is that your career is really what you make of it in any country.. you are only limited by your own creativity, courage, motivation and work ethic. Sure there are challenges in every job and career.. trust me as a female from a science background now living and running a tech company in Japan I have seen some challenges and people who have tried to give me excuses about the things I can do and the things I can't.. but with integrity, honesty, courage and flexibility combined with a willingness to work with people rather than telling them how things ought to be done.. you can really achieve anything and also be happy..

There is nothing worse than somebody whinging about what they can't do because others are discriminating against them for whatever reason.. there will always be people who will use any excuse to keep their own power.. I have seen/experienced various forms of racism, sexism, age-ism etc.. If you focus on the negatives you will not move forward. There is always a way around - don't focus on the problem but look for the solution...

The main thing is that you chase your passion, it doesn't really feel like you are working and things work out as they should.. if you chase money or the easy life then you are putting yourself in the path of misery..

I didn't realise this would be so heavy.... you're in college - you should also be having fun!!!!!!!!

There are always the notable exceptions and the exceptional notables. However, most of the females I've seen majoring in chemistry would probably be greatly enhanced by the odd explosion.
