Yamanote Line Alarm Clock

Postby Mulboyne » Wed Jun 14, 2006 9:17 pm

Image

Not quite as cool as Mr. Sparkle's mobile phone but JR East has started selling this alarm clock which plays the melodies from a number of Tokyo Yamanote Line stations. Yours for 7.980 yen. For an extra 300 yen, they'll deliver it to your nearest JR station to pick-up or an extra 600 yen for home delivery.

That thing is awesome, the first thing that reminds me that I am in Japan are those melodies.

I want one too, but it's about 50% overpriced. Maybe we can get a group discount?

I had a simliar thought since aren't both the music and station names pretty much all public domain materials...just change the train emblem, maybe the color and call it the YAM-Note clock

I'll be out in Japan in a month or so and was planning to pick one up so, like Slim, I could get more then. I probably know some money managers and brokers who meet with JR East's investor relations people which might prove a cheaper route to go or it might not. I do like the idea of trying to trace the supply chain back to it's source since it's not retailing that cheaply.

the sad thing is that this is probably the type of item you can't bring with you when you finally have to leave Japan...it weighs about half a kilo.

Tokyo's ring of steel
Who would have thought that something that chases its tail all day for a living could be so incredibly important to the workings of a major metropolis?

OK, so Tokyo's humble Yamanote Line, whose pea-green, 11-car trains link 29 stations over a looping route of 34.5 km, may not have the glamour of Japan's world-famous shinkansen bullet trains, or the allure of the Romance Car as it heads off to the hills and hot springs in the shadow of Mount Fuji. Yet for sheer, hardworking utility, astounding punctuality and frequency and the connections it makes with other rail routes, there's nothing to compare with East Japan Railway Company's Yamanote Line....more...

Yamanote-Sen Alarm Clock in Tokyo?

Postby abraxis » Mon Aug 14, 2006 6:38 am

I'm wondering, is there a store in Tokyo that has these clocks in stock?

Like a JR goods store or something like that? All I'm finding is online shops that have this item.

Not that I'm aware of. I think online is the only route at the moment. I haven't got over to Japan as early as I expected so I haven't followed up yet with the people I mentioned in my earlier post.

I haven't been to offical JR goods store in Ueno station in a while but I did look yesterday at one largest outlets of the Yodobashi Camera. They didn't have a JR alarm clock, but they sure had plenty of Hello Kitty clocks (and iPod enabled clocks).]http://www.fuckedgaijin.com/forums/images/vbimghost/12944dfb0570e759.jpg[/img]

Ahh, I didn't want to bring this up, but why is it on most of the threads that Taro always seems to find a way to work it in to Hello Kitty? Taro have you and that cat got something going on?
