The Adventures Of Super Nip

"What Are You Anyways?" a good short animation by Jeff Chiba Stearns on growing up a mix of Japanese and Caucasian in smalltown Canada. I liked the reason he wasn't attracted to Japanese girls. Click on "watch" towards the top right of the page on the link.

Some people expend far too much mental effort on things they can't change.

Do you know what you are?
You are what you is
You is what you am
A cow don't make ham
You ain't what you're not
So see what you got
You are what you is
And that's all it is

Jesus Christ, high school kids called him things like "nip"?! I went to high school with the usual bunch of American Beavis and Butthead types, but we'd all been pretty much inculcated since birth not to use ethnic slurs. I'm always surprised when I hear a Canadian use terms "paki" or "chink" ("Those keener chinks make it hard for us Canadians to get into university, eh"), but I guess I shouldn't be - Canadia is kind of a weird and parochial place. But still pretty likeable - between June and September.

And speaking of political correctness, Jeff Chiba-Stearns notes that his Canadian-Japanese mom's sisters all married "white" guys. This seems to further support the widely-noted but seldom-mentioned phenomenon of there existing a sort of odd ethnic dating/marriage heirarchy. A majority of American nikkei-jin women marry Euro-Americans; a lot of nikkei-jin guys marry Chinese women; the Chinese guys marry SE Asian women (or Chinese-born Chinese), and so on. The pattern is certainly replicated in Japan, with 80% of international marriages here involving J-guys and gaijin, mostly Asian, women. Same goes for S. Korea.

now there you go spoiling all of our fun and turning this thread back into an intelligent dialogue.. what t'do do now :D

having grown up in the "weird parochial" country of canadia, i can attest that sadly, racial slurs were not uncommon. some groups more than others however were on the receiving end of disrespect. i like to think it's gotten better and i certainly heard less from about high school onwards, at least towards those of asian ethnicity. i have no idea how it is now.

the issue of marriage is an interesting one too. japanese have been shown most likely to marry someone of a different race while koreans were by and large the most insular.

Absolutely right. Now about this marriage issue! Regardless of nationality, why would one want to ruin a perfectly good relationship, by inserting a wife into it?

As a matter of fact, everytime I get a good new relationship started, my wife finds out about it and ruins the whole thing!

You just need a more understanding wife! ;)
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
