The Ring - Japanese Vs. US?

Postby Komainu » Sun Feb 23, 2003 7:57 pm

seen both and the american remake kicks the japanese version into a bloody pulp...sayin that tho, when u watched the japanese version, it had a realness about it that gets lost in the hollywood remake...anyone else seen both

speakin of movies, when western movies are translated into japanese, do they translate it wiv all the "hierachy and how to adress a superior" bullshit ? and because westerners arent as "prohibited" as the japanese in terms of the culture, do they seem kinda vulga to the japanese?

I haven't seen the Japanese one yet, but I saw the American remake and am sure I'll like it better than the Japanese one [shrieks from my Japanese acquaintances]. My Korean friends said they liked the American one better.

A lot of the Japanese hierarchy and other things that will make the movie more comfortable for Japanese viewers are put into translations. I suspect it has more to do with sales than anything else.

I've seen some really bad English translations of Japanese movies. I have Tonari no Totoro on DVD and tried to watch it with English dubbing the other day. The interpreters completely stripped it of its Japanese culture. I could only handle it for a few minutes, then set it to Japanese dialog with English subtitles. Once again, it was completely Americanized. I'm not a movie translator, but I could have done a much better job with some of those lines and kept the Japanese flavor intact.

i like the real gritty 16 mm look of the first ring... i mean, i think while not necessarily intended, that moreso low budget look fitted the style and concept of the film more than a high budget hollywood look could provide. but many people would argue otherwise...

I liked each movie for different reasons. The Ring was what good horror movies are supposed to be as opposed to slasher flicks. I liked the Hitchcock methods it used.

Ringu was definately more rooted in reality as far as the style of the movie and it's characters. It didn't depend on special effects as much for spookiness either.

I think overall they compliment each other.
