Host families sought for visiting Japanese exchange students

Teenage girls will be in Salem for classes in July and August

. . . The Fujimi High School [Tokyo] summer program is seeking host families for Japanese students who will be in Salem from July 24 to Aug. 6.

The students . . . will be studying English at Willamette University weekdays while they are here, as well as taking trips to the coast, Mount Hood and around the Salem area.

The evenings and weekends will be spent with the host families . . .

They can check out Salem's lot.

Salem's pretty blah, but Willamette is a good university (pronounced Will-amit.. Willamette, damn it!)

Wish I was a host family.. Could show those young girls how a beaver's supposed to party.

I wonder how many of those young girls get in trouble in foreign countries. Parents are outright reckless for sending their kids to live with strangers in a foreign country.

As do I! I feel obligated as an FG resident in Japan to assist all deserving J-girls with their beaver problems!

And now, more hosts needed, in Nevada . . .

Japanese students need Nevada County hosts

. . . On July 24, the Cultural Homestay International - a Houston-based nonprofit organization that brings students from around the world to the U.S. - will bring 30 Japanese students to Nevada County.

The organization is now in search of families who would be willing to host one of the students for a four-week stay until Aug. 20. So far 15 homes have been found. Fifteen more families need to open their doors to the far eastern guests of Nevada County.

Families need to meet few criteria to be able to host a student.

"It's required that the student has a separate bed to sleep in, whether it is a shared bedroom or an individual room," said Janet Zeeryp Malone, teacher coordinator with the organization . . . more

:jawdrop: The fact that they need to state that is a little sad but no doubt based on previous bad experiences.

Some of them could have enjoyed it. They all didn't have to be bad!

My friend dates a J-girl who works for a homestay company in Toronto. Her job is to go around inspecting homes of candidate families. The majority are poor and of the downtrodden class who need the extra income to pay their bills. The biggest challenge she has is to make sure that what the families agree to provide actually do provide and not mislead. Over 40% of the students request to be moved to another location because what the hosts provide falls short of the agreement. Often being given cereal or peanut butter sandwiches as a meal. This homestay business is ripe for big trouble for unsuspecting J-kids especially if they go farther afield like Nevada where big homstay organisations do not exist. If you come to Toronto and have a bad experience call the company that put you there and they'll quickly move you around somewhere else or you can go to one of the other dozens or so companies to find a place. Where do you go in Nevada?
