eBay = worry :(

Postby emperor » Fri Jun 16, 2006 8:53 pm

I won an auction for a passively cooled 7600GT video card on eBay last week.
Got it for a nice price $145+$40: quite a bit less than it normaly goes for.
I sent the money promptly by paypal to this guy living in Massachusetts.
Aside from one email before the transaction ended (about the total weight) and another after telling me that it would be Monday until the post office opened and then the package and tracking number would be sent:
He hasnt been in touch since.
His ebay feedback became private.
Now, his ebay account is no longer registered.
One of his email addresses bounces back with a permanent failure message.
I was able to get his phone number, and have tried calling early morning late, middle of afternoon and late evening; but theres no answer; a womans voice with the same family name has a message on the answering machine.

I can contact paypal to try to get the money back - i dont think you get it all back though: something like 80% of it... and it takes a month.

Im trying to rationalise the lack of communication:
maybe the family went away on a trip or their internet connection has a problem or theyre out working all the time...

but as he's 'no longer a registered ebay user' - Im inclined to think Im being scammed :(

I'd be inclined to agree.
Check out the 'Item Not Received' procedure on the Ebay help pages. It can take about a month to get any money back, and it's likely it'll not be all of it.

If you can get his address off your Paypal account (if it's there), maybe you can send someone round to lynch him.....

You've just been pumped up the anus by an ebay scammer. How was his feedback before it became private? What other items had he sold? Did you email him before you agreed to pay, to see how he'd reply.

Is his ebay email the same as his paypal? Did you try to contact any of the other buyers in his feedback before you bought the item?

JUst curious... I fucking loathe scammers...

Well, it doesn't sound good...but it may not be completely dire...While there are no shortage of scammers out there, ebay/paypal are setup in such a way that if there are enough complaints or even just one or two in a short frame (such as both a paypal and ebay complaint at the same time), a fairly big gun is pointed at the seller and if they don't respond in the correct and in very timely fashion, the gun goes off automatically....an ebay email gets bounced by your isp, boom....no response to an ebay email in 72 hours, boom...and I get a fake phising email (some quite convincing) along these lines about every week or so. Now I'm not saying this set up is terribly wrong, but it is possible that a non-scammer can be shot fairly easily....So, at this stage, I'd be 75% worried...Although the feedback going private (unless they were starting to focus on selling thins like porn or highly probable pirated goods) is a really bad sign.

Without getting into the financial details of your transaction (and I'm using a US viewpoint here, so there may be some international quirks I'm unaware of), if you paid with a credit card, the odds are you'll get all your money back. Even if paypal doesn't refund the $, you can still complain to your credit card company and get it refunded that way...While it may take paypal 6-8 weeks to finish their process, be sure to file a complaint with your credit card company after you see the charge for the item on your statement in order to preserve your rights...basically tell them that you paid for something you didn't get, that paypal is investigating and you'll get back to them if paypal doesn't resolve the issue on their own.

If you paid via paypal balance or bank transfer, your odds are less good (recovery of your money is more dependant on Paypal being able to haul the money out of the seller's bank account-if the seller has closed that account, the odds become lower). While paypal makes you jump through hoops to use a credit card (including the 'are really, really, sure you want to use a credit card?' screen, which is due to the fact that it costs paypal more when you use a credit card to make payment instead of bank transfer), it is worth it for the added protection it provides.

he got back in touch!!
...after I filed a dispute wih Paypal and got through to the guys mom on the phone (the family appear to be Latino immigrants and I couldnt understand half of what she was saying, although she may have been covering for him, she said that the family name didnt apply to that house/phone number - but thats the name on the answering machine, i explained the situation and gave my name and phone number, maybe she gave him a big slap :p) - he said he was very busy and couldnt email me - he said he'd send it today - but soon he was emailing again saying that he's babysitting and dosent have access to a car to get to he post office or some shit - i checked the usps site and found 2 post offices within 2 miles of his house

hopefully he'll send it tommorrow otherwise ill apply to have a refund issued

meanwhile I have move up the ranks on my newly purchased/legit version of Battlefield 2 deluxe edition on an adequate but antiquating 6600GT

You deserve more. Like this:

Call of Duty 2, Quad G5 Mac, 30" Cinema Display at 2560x1600, Quadro FX4500 card at 4x FSAA.

You should have waited for the Conroe chips Charles!
bang in a seperately purchased 7900GTX, a couple more gigs of RAM and youre set to play games on your MacPro on Windows using bootcamp!

No reason to wait, my most important apps won't be Intel Native probably for a long time after the Intel Pro Macs ship. And besides, I don't want to buy a 1st generation Intel pro Mac. I'd rather have the last gen G5 to get me over the transition. I am betting that my Quad will outperform the first Intel pro Macs in most of my work.

Still, you have to be amazed by that screenshot (if only you could see it all at once at full rez). You'd really be amazed what it's like playing on a 30" LCD with a fast video card.

Im sure youre very happy with it, but it seems like too big an investment for such short term gain. Youll be lucky to get near half the original cost back when selling it - if you do wait till the x86 models and universal binary apps come. For all that extra money youre probably only shaving minutes off tasks on a daily basis? Would be wiser to invest less during the transitional period.

Its been indicated that the base level Mac pros will easily match he likes of quadcore G5s in most respects, and Rev B models shouldnt be too many months away from now.

Early indications are that some of the CPU-intensive tasks I do a lot, like encoding MPEG2 video for DVDs, won't be substantially faster under the Intel SSE code than they are in G5 Altivec. So I'm satisfied I'll be competitive for a while, and satisfied it was a good investment that saves me many hours on long encodings etc. And I'm not even going to guess when my major apps like Maya or Photoshop are ported to Intel.
I checked benchmarks and the only CPUs that outperform mine are quad 2.8ghz Opteron machines that cost about 2x what mine cost, even if you build a whitebox machine by yourself. And even those boxes are just barely faster than a Quad G5 2Ghz. So it's a fair deal.

Anyway, didn't mean to hijack your thread with the endless PPC vs Intel debate. Hope you get your card, or your money back. Here's a story that I hope will inspire you:

I hope you get your card (and at least the guy is back in contact with you), but count yourself lucky as that is not a lot of money.

I lost 460,000yen recently in an auction scam.

Not much has happened. I went to the cops about it and went through all the BS of filling out a report, and then filed it back with Yahoo. Now it is pending their review with regards to getting 80% back via Yahoo's insurance.

A few weeks ago a group of 7 was arrested in Tokyo for 100mil yen in auction scams and I'm pretty sure this was who got my 46man. Suppose I could wait for them to get out of jail and then go "collect"...

I recall you mentioning that. Did the boys is blue seem even vaguely interested in pursuing that angle? The JNP do love to get some action that belongs to a PD in another city/prefecture. It's kinda like they want to play "I know more about what is going on in your turf than you do!"

You might want to urge them on that, not that it will help you get your dust back!

Damn Lurker! WTF were you buying? car? motorcycle? Filapino love-slave?

Even though the guy got back in touch:
its just been emails back and forth for 3 days now...
the tracking number that he sent me when he eventually got around to posting it corresponded to a package sent to California in 2005 - but today it seems to check out (sent from his city on the day he said he sent it)
he offered to email me a pic of the receipt, but the pics he sent were taken in poor lighting, with shaky hands and as a result the text on the receipt/parcel form was illegible (aside from one which only showed a portion - and only confirmed he had written mine and his names and addresses...

its been especially frustrating because I would ask him questions and he would reply without answers, but rather partial bits of info that didnt really help or apply to what i wanted to know... and his English grammar was headache enducing!

so hopefully it should be here in a few days... :-?

Hmm, now that's an interesting idea. Can you get those on Yahoo Auctions?

Buyer Beware

Postby emperor » Tue Jun 27, 2006 12:42 am

I was just on to Paypal...

because I originally claimed that I hadnt recieved anything

(and then the seller sent me a cheap dvd player with a tracking number which will check out as being delivered)

I cannot change my claim to having recieved an item that differs to what I paid for...

meaning that I will get no compensation as he has sent me something...

I rang them and while the first guy I spoke to was sympathetic, the supervisor I spoke to after him was a total bitch and just spouted company scripted bullshit...

I got my credit card company to refund my money.

I had to give Mastercard printouts of my email correspondance, some pics of the stuff that was sent & a letter from a computer shop saying that the dvd player I received is in fact NOT a video card.

I hand delivered them cause it turned out their office are opposite my workplace & the girl with the nice speaking voice who had been dealing with my case - rather pleasant surprise: turned out to be smoking hot in person.
Now, Im gonna have to start accidentally meeting her in queues at the local panini joint or get myself in some more bother with my credit card.
