good price for knife?

Postby big_pear » Sun Feb 23, 2003 11:49 am

I'm looking for a fairly good kitchen knife. Is 80,000 yen too much for a 17cm bunko bocho made in germany?
pears, are a nice shape to be. A klutz in the kitchen, i've burned water.

If you live in Tokyo, go to Tsukiji markets - next to the fish markets.

There are a heap of catering supply places in the general market.. 80,000 sounds a bit steep for a knife - I use one from the 100 yen shop..

but if you are a chef.. go to the markets before you shell out the equivalent of a starbuck's arubaito monthly salary..

for 80,000 yen, they better hand craft that bad boy. It better have a pearl shell handle, with an ivory emblem on the butt of the knife. Gold better be inlaid in the blade :p

If not, ur getting ripped a new bumhole.

Actually, I thought this thread was a some kind of veiled threat. The standard plot ploy in Japanese TV is if someone is looking to buy a knife in Scene One, someone is gonna be stuck with that knife by Scene Three.

well actually

Well.... actually ended up buying the said same blade but it was 20% off here state side at marshal field's. The yen price was to give something you might be more used to. While I do have a set of ginsu(sp) knives, lately i've found them ripping thru uncooked meat instead of cutting it.
As for prices, this is what i've found is the norm for knives that are not in a multi pack. Straight bladed knives are not the norm here state side. But with using it for a few days now, it has been a pleasure to use.
Only thing i've been wondering is should i've gone with a whet stone ground edge for $ 30 more. Plus the lack of weight is a bit disconcerning. Though I do feel a little guilty just tossing it in with the serving spoons.

ps: settled for Wusthof witch you can find at http://www.dreizach.de, was lusting after a Dinku blade which was 2.5 times more.
