Superman is a communist!

Postby AlbertSiegel » Tue Aug 10, 2004 4:04 pm

It seems that not only does Soviet Supreme have Evil pongi on his side, but also the help of Superman! Can Rob Pongi and AssKissinger stop Soviet Supreme?

Joseph Stalin and Superman would seem to have little in common except their shared nickname, "the Man of Steel." Stalin was a brutal dictator who murdered millions, while Superman is the mythical embodiment of truth, justice and the American way. Yet in Superman: Red Son, a new three-part comic book series, the first of which has just been released by DC Comics, writer Mark Millar posits an alternative universe where Superman grew up on a collective farm in the Ukraine in the 1930s rather than in the idyllic Midwest town of Smallville, U.S.A.

Indoctrinated with communist ideology from birth, this new version of Superman grows up to be a "champion of the common worker" who "fights a never-ending battle for Stalin, socialism and the international expansion of the Warsaw Pact." In the first chapter of the series, which is selling briskly at comic book stores, the Stalinist Superman is well on his way to leading the Soviet Union of the 1950s to victory in the Cold War, using his superpowers to make his native land the world's only superpower.

This looks cool. Mark Millar did an awesome run on The Authority a few years back.

Superman Eschews Longtime Patriot Act

Actually, at first I thought this article was about Superman eschewing the USA PATRIOT Act, but it's actually more interesting.

Is Superman still American?

Ever since artist Joe Shuster and writer Jerry Siegel introduced the granddaddy of all comic book icons in 1938, Superman has fought valiantly to preserve "truth, justice and the American way."

Whether kicking Nazi butt on the radio in the '40s or wrapping himself in the Stars and Stripes on TV during the Cold War or even rescuing the White House's flag as his final feat in "Superman II," the Krypton-born, Smallville-raised Ubermensch always has been steeped in unmistakable U.S. symbolism.

But in his latest film incarnation, screenwriters Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris sought to downplay Superman's long-standing patriot act. With one brief line uttered by actor
Frank Langella, the caped superhero's mission transformed from "truth, justice and the American way" to "truth, justice and all that stuff."
...
"The truth is he's an alien. He was sent from another planet. He has landed on the planet Earth, and he is here for everybody. He's an international superhero."

I never even thought about this when I was growing up. Superman comics were always loaded with American imagery and I didn't think about the fact that as an alien he shouldn't have an allegiance to any particular country (even though the character was raised by an American family).

The other interesting thing is that the movie was shot in Australia, and the "Americans" he rescues in the movie speak with an Australian accent!

well he is a Christ-like being (& Jesus was a Jew)
and his name sounds kinda Jewish (Kal-El)
and the Jewish successfully implemented the 'kibbutz' system
and according to a racist French guy I was talking to; the Jews are responsible for the creation of the concept of Communism

ergo...visa-vi...concordantly...

I think in one of the comics he avoids a fight with Batman because he has to rush off and fight the Soviets alongside the US army.
& I read somewhere that supposedly in the new movie Sept 11th and the "war on terror" couldnt be avoided cause he was out there looking for life back on Krypton?
If superman was real, it would be more realistic that he wouldnt take sides and basically threaten the world to play nice with each other or he'll wipe them off the face of the planet ...and then he could get back to picking up chicks and boozing!

y'know. ur right. i hadn't really thought that way, much less seen that idea portrayed, especially not back in the early days of superman. but, it does fit his image to preserve and save all human life. very cool :)
haven't seen the new superman movie. dun know if i will either. i am gonna see the new Pirates movie come the 7th though :D

It's interesting that my understanding of the word "alien" in the above quote as well as the one before it was different. I understood it more within the present context and immediately thought, "That's right, Superman is an illegal alien."

And then I thought, "How ironic."

J-comics are straight forward in their themes
you got that kodomo ( doraemon/pokemon ), the trekkie type mecha-anime, hentai tentacle porn and such

American comics are very clever and are sometimes like books such as 'history of violence' or 'road to perdition' but they also do many super-heroes like superman/spiderman and even their heroic characters are filled with hints of propaganda, race issues or social comments

So you think they're backward? I've never got to see a frame of Clark breechloading Lois on a daily planet desk. Maybe you better send in the tentacle dude, or better yet, get the dog a cape!

wtf are you trying to say? And "Kal-El" sounds about as Jewish as ham and mayonnaise on Wonder bread.
