Tattoo's on my forearms, will it affect my chances of work a great deal?

Postby Papa-Lazarou » Tue Jul 04, 2006 4:07 am

I am sorry if this has been asked a 1000 times, but in a moment of madness (and immense drunkeness) i had some (well, quite a lot of) Thai writing tatood onto my forearms in Bkk, similar to this, but well errm better
Image

Anyway i am due to start with Berlitz in 3 months and i didnt have the tats done back when i was interviewed.

Is this gonna be a massive problem, can i expect to be told to wear long sleve shirts, or worse still, to sling my proverbial hook?

Thanx

Long sleeve shirts for you it is. You might want to wear a tshirt travelling to work and change when you get there in the hot summer months.

Bonus is of course it's usually totally freezing inside buildings during summer. I always have to take a jacket with me if I am going to be in an office for more than an hour.

Oh crap, i knew i would regret having them done.

They look lovely too

I remember getting frowned on in the changing room Golds Gym in Harajaku last year for having stuff on my back.

Will i be frowned upon for even having tats? or wont they mind as long as they are covered up in front of the paying public? (Berlitz that is)

Thanx anyway

If Berlitz don't see em they won't care. It's n ot like they have x-ray vision.

You'll probably find some places will not let you in (bath houses and so on) - but you'll find those out pretty soon.

Anyway they'll get an airing when you are not at work.

What kind of Thai writing? Their script looks really cool; I've never seen it done as a tattoo though. If the tattoo is anywhere but on your arms, no pictures please.:p

Sheeee-it. Doesn't Berlitz still require a jacket and tie? (Berlitz used to be businessman orientated.)
Just stock up on quality light Egyption cotton long sleeve shirts and do NOT allow this to become an "issue" in the first couple months, capeesh?.;)

You could try wearing double-cuff shirts with small padlocks as cuff-links to guard against any unconscious rolling of sleeves.

Depending on where you look for a job, some IT places are even more conservative than anal eikaiwas.....

What color? Darker colours tend to be easier to remove than lighter colours because of the way that the lasers work. Black is easiest. Not all laser removal techniques are equal either, there are newer and older methods. You'll want to find a good clinic with the most up-to-date equipment if you are going to get this removed.

Ahh, you're wearing suits now?

Tochigi must have been harder on you than I thought! First the gay, I mean Hard Brucie and now Seville Row, complete with a bow tie?

Hmmm

Ive decided on faking a forearm (therefore wanking) injury by employing 1 of those elastic stockings on my right arm.

If anyone asks why i have been injured for a whole year i will tell them i am a cronic masturbator. (no point in lying any more than i have to)

Probably better than laser removal - I've heard it's painful, expensive, and you are likely to end up with scars in the tattoo shape anyway.

I have one and a half sleeves definitely get looks from the locals but I dont teach english or have a 9 to 5 so I dont have to worry about bosses or co-workers. My guess would be that you would most likely be wearing long sleeves anyways so its no big deal I wouldn't sweat it.

View of tattoos

Postby Wilecoyote » Sun Jan 14, 2007 2:44 am

Hi everyone,

Ive read quite alot of articles about tattoos being frowned upon cos of old sterotypes of the yakuza. Other than at work how do the japanese react to them in public. ie. in bars and places like that, do you get funny looks off people or are they not really bothered.I have tats on the back of my of my forearms i also have a skin head. Im going to japan this summer am i likely to get funny looks of people?
Thanks

You're going to get funny looks whether you have tattoos or not, so don't worry about it. It's not like they are going to think you're in the Yakuza!

Having a clean head is common enough----tats are only an issue for employment and occasionally swimming pools. As maraboutslim said that fact you are an alien sort of clouds all other factors in eyes of the Japanese in public.:eye:

Wouldn't it be easier to buy yourself a white Mercedes, lower it, stick some big chrome wheels on it and run bitches, pachinko parlours and kill people? Just a thought in case you fancied a career change :)

The reminds me i that last year i went to an onsen in chofu and there they were : two young yaks with the back totally covered with a big mean tatoo not yet finished (only the outlines were showing).
They were bathing like everbody else minding their own business.
An hour later i found myself alone with them in the smoking room, i resisted the urge to say "hey nice tats !" during the whole time.
