Postby crouching_tiger » Tue Jul 11, 2006 6:55 am

As you can see from Charles's helpful reaction that advice on English Teaching here ain't the best....

I was a teacher for 1o years in Japan and had a ball....and somehow, it didn't make me scum.

For more advice on stuff like that, prolly http://www.gaijinpot.com or similar.

I knew at least 5 people who bought their degrees in Asia and got visas....it's a bit dodgy but they haven't been caught!

Here, more likely to get the low down on being a long term gaijin...!

So, is it not uncommon to do the 'buying the degree' thing, even today?

my friend said that it's an idea to go to south east asia, buy the degree,
then apply from there as a) it's cheap to hang around in, say, thailand
and b) you've not far to leap once you get the job.

Could you comment on that please?

thanks for taking the time.

charles... umm... riiiiiight *says in the style of doctor evil*

I got an English teaching job without a degree.

Basically, you need a degree to get a VISA to stay in Japan, not to get the job.

if you've got a J-wife, you can stay in Japan and get the job. Thats how I did it.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

You could try, but there are smart students of eikaiwa, and they'll sus you out right away.
'course you could always content yourself with teaching those who have no idea that the person they're giving their cash to is a phoney.

great, i'll just marry a japanese bird so i can have a one year break.

phoney my ass, you're only phoney if you're intentions are dodgey. I don't
see why i should be deprived of getting to see the world just because i
didn't do a degree. But i do see why they would have this as a requirement
to keep people out who could be idol.

Your inflated sense of entitlement, lack of job qualifications, and plans to get in the country under false pretenses indicate ...

that you will fit in perfectly with the rest of us. Let us know when you get here and we'll all go out for drinks!!

I have a J-wife. Does this mean that I can get ANY job or just Engrish teacher? If so, I'm there! In 8 years.

again, how old are you?

Damn I wish people would read the archives first!!!

However, given that your English is so bad, I am not inclined to be helpful.

You can try to get any job you want with a proper "pet license" (spouse visa). However, your job opportunities will be just about the same as the US for a person without a college degree or special skills. Even the engrish schools will be harder on anybody without a degree (that is, the better paying schools will ignore you or start you at a lower pay-scale). Larger Japanese companies, prefer degrees for white-collar workers---smaller Japanese companies who may ignore your lack of a degree can be hell holes. The good thing about Japan is it can be a great place for a talented but young gaijin trying to break into a crowded field like design or graphics. Just being a Japanese-speaking gaijin can open a lot doors normally closed to a smart young FG in the West (or don't exist in the developing world).

Maybe i'm being nieve. I thought only forums for computer games were melting pots for egotistical or judgemental people who would rather hinder than help.

Some of you people must be very bored.

I shall leave the thread and carry on as usual. I suggest some of you stop loggin on here and purchase a mirror then spend a while staring into it.

Hey, tiger.
You took the trouble to sign up and post your question.
You got some answers. They weren't all what you wanted to hear but people took the time to answer. It's all just pixels on your screen.

The reason I asked how old you were was because you may be eligible for the working holiday visa that means you will not need a damned degree. But all of this is on archives.

Sheesh...

Buy a dictionary.
