Import Beer

Postby maninjapan » Sun Jul 16, 2006 10:02 pm

Ok in dire need of some imported ales from Britain as starting to miss them and this gassy stuff they call beer is doing my head in.

Are there any online shops or good stores.
will the last one out please turn the light off.....

If you have a Costco store nearby they sometimes have Cooper's Ales.
Not British, I know, but a pretty good ale nevertheless.

Coopers Ale is the nectar of the gods.. If you are going to drink it, don't be a wuss and get the Pale.. Go for the Sparkling Ale, the red label.. That stuff is the best. From my home town none the less. Brewed in the bottle.. Mmm, I might have to crack one now..

Strange fact, there is enough minerals, carbs, vitamins etc etc in that beer, that if you drink 17 of them you can survive for one day.. At 5.8% alcohol vol, it is a good day also.. I ahve proven this, inducing nothing but Coopers Sparkling Ale for 10 days straight.. Awesome days.

17 a day? at 330ml or 500ml size? Because you would be seriously dehyrdrated from drinking that much - that you wouldn't last 10 days!

I would place 100,000 yen on you not being able to survive on it for 10days?

Don't you think they would have used that as some marketing ploy?!

Made me the damn Guinness drinker I am today...I feel your pain man, don't succumb to the local brew

It's there. I've drunken it. You were just looking for it in the wrong places.

I've always wanted to try a micro-brew from Bairds, but the price always scares me:

Kaldi has import beer. Not sure if they have British though..
http://www.kaldi.co.jp/store/index.html

Tokyu shopping centers usually have import alcohol sections.. I've had some import brew from a wine shop at Hachiko; down the stairs where all the smokers used hang out in front of the dog statue, left to enter the food area, then left..

I'm not that fussy anymore. It is now the season for TY Harbor Brewery and one can go there and just get pissed as one pleases on their jibiru while on the "dock"! If you start at one end of the menu and work to the other end, it won't be long until you forget about what the pint might be lacking and more concerned about ordering another!

Whereas, if you didn't drink them, you might survive for approximately 10-14 days. ]Australia wins 'World Cup' of beer[/B]

Marks were awarded for taste, appearance, balance and drinkability, with a sparkling ale produced by South Australian brewer Coopers named the eventual winner.

i dun know about coopers ale, but Guiness has enough nutrients to "live off of" for about a week. albeit, not the healthiest week of one's life, but yeah, it's doable. there are places online, i would think. off-hand, i don't know any that ship outside the US. plenty ship in the US, but not outside.
as an avid english, german, and belgium beer drinker, i feel your pain :(

Thanks for the links dimwit. I stayed there for a hedonistic month and stayed mainly around Tokyo (Minamisenju was home), didn't get much change to travel around.

Will mark these down in my to-do diary next time I'm there. In my experience Murphy's doesn't travel well so I'm not holding out any great hope

I realize alcohol is a diaretic. But I've never read anything that clarifies if the small amount of alcohol in a large glass of water (i.e. a beer) is enough to cause you lose all the water and then some. Is it really a net loss as far as liquid intake goes?

Because you can live an awful long time on water alone. To quote the first google result for "how long can you live on water alone":

"After one day without food, the body will have used up its carbohydrates, which are stored as glycogen in liver and muscle cells. After that, it's on to the fat reserves. Your average Joe/Jane, weight-wise, has enough fat reserves to live for four to six weeks without food. After that, the body begins to use its protein reserves (basically, the body itself). Body proteins are used up at a much faster rate than fat, and you could really only get another two to three weeks out of protein. At that point, however, you can't really call it living since so much irreparable damage has been done to the body, including the brain.

Bottom line: an average person could live for about eight weeks on water alone, give or take about a week for an over- or underweight person, respectively."

http://www.mcvitamins.com/Health%20Opponents/alcohol.htm

When alcohol goes into the bloodstream it causes the pituitary gland to block the creation of "vasopression". Without this chemical the kidneys send the water directly to the bladder instead of reabsorbing it into the body. The body will lose 4 times the amount of liquid that it gained. Thus you get really thirsty the next morning and a headache that is a result of dehydration. The body will actually take water from the brain causing it to decrease in size and pull on the membranes that connect the brain to the skull

Your body loses four times liquid as it takes in! Still think you did it for 10 days?

I've ordered imported beer from this place before - http://www.ikonbeer.com/

However, a lot of the links on their webpage don't seem to work now so not sure if they're still around. (I ordered from them about 3 years ago)

What I should ahve said is that it has all of the required carbohydrates, minerals, energy and everything the body needs to survive.. 17 of them equals the recommended daily intake of this for one day..

100,000 yen if I can survive for 10 days on nothing but Coopers Sparkling Ale.. Are you paying for the beer? I have done it before, will do it again.. Just need to get the time off of work.. I must admit that at the end of it, I wasn't feeling very healthy, it was a bit of bender, but boy it was fun. Once you get through the first 5 or 6 for the day it is all easy sailing from there on in..

Here's a guy that tried to live on Guinness for a week, you might be able to get some tips from him in your escapades:

http://theguinnessdiet.blogspot.com/2005/06/final-day.html

Little known fact: The inspiration for this comes from the Irish secondary school curriculum. It is a "module" for age 14+ students to sample a week in the life on alcoholic, all part of an effort to prepare them for adulthood in Ireland...
