Mr. Sparkle To Land In Little Tokyo

[floatr]Image[[/floatr]Hey Gang,
Boston didn't work out, can't survive the SF Dotcom 2 devival, so on to Plan B: LA, here I come.

A loft in Little Tokyo might be cool, but I'm probably gonna be closer to the Film-TV post action in Burbank-Hollywood. I'll be laying the groundwork for the eventual Pongi-vasion. YEEEEEEEEAAAHHHH BABY! YEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHH!

Any FGs in LA? Please get in touch. I need a decent wingman and folks to drink and BBQ with.

Hey, my old neighborhood! Lofts near there are out of reach due to gentrification, my decrepit old $1000/mo loft is now a million dollar condo that appeared in Architectural Digest. Back then, I could have bought the whole building for $120k, grrr. If you really want a loft, I hear all the artists moved to Glendora, which would be more conveniently located nearer to Glendale/Burbank. I hear they're trying to start a "cultural district" in Culver City, which is located close to a lot of film & video production facilities.

What's this about the SF "devival"?!? I'm trying to decide myself between moving to either SF or LA, I figured SF would be the place for CG geeks like me, since the new Presidio project started and other major CG studios are up there. But I always seem to have the worst timing, I moved up to SF in 1990 during the post-CDROM era "devival" and I left just before the first dotcom boom. That was really bad timing. But I've got to make a move in the next 60 days.

Oh well, keep us updated on the LA scene, I think the annual festival is just starting in Little Tokyo. I will probably be around LA soon myself, I will buy you a round or two at my favorite izakaya.

I wouldn't live in Little Tokyo. Burbank is really beautiful in some places - I would have lived there with a little more income at my disposal. It ain't cheap but worth the mountain views, horse trails and perfect weather.

Little Tokyo has some awesome apartments, but they're pretty much 100% nihonjin, you want to be a fucked gaijin in LA, try renting in Little Tokyo. But Little Tokyo is not the Loft District. The Little Tokyo Lofts aren't even IN Little Tokyo OR the Loft District, they're in Skid Row, about 1/2 block from the Rescue Mission. You do NOT want to live there.
I've been in about every crappy loft building in the Loft District and lived in several of them, and I can personally assure you it is a very tough place to live. Not just because of its proximity to Skid Row, but because it's a very popular location for filming. Most lofts are so expensive that artists can't afford them unless they rent them out to film shoots occasionally. I lived on Traction Avenue for 2 years and I had to put up with over 15 film shoots, it got to be fucking intolerable.

Jeez, I used to live right near there, at Moorpark & Tujunga in Studio City. But I am sure things have changed a lot since the late 80s, when I moved out.

The Valley isn't too bad, as long as you have good air conditioning. Your place is a good spot for getting a few different directions, you can shoot down Cahuenga to Hollywood; to downtown via the 101; or Burbank/Glendale/Pasadena E on the Ventura Fwy. But it really sucks if you want to get to W LA or Santa Monica, you have to go far out of your way W down the Ventura to the 405 S. I did a 3 month contract job, commuting from Studio City to Santa Monica every day, in 8 weeks I burned out the disc brakes on my brand new car from all the stop and go driving on the 405.

There's nothing quite as nice as moving in to a brand new building. There are no remnants of previous tenants, like cockroaches or dog pee in the carpet. Everything is all new, and it's all yours. Enjoy.

Hey Sparkle,

I used to live in Van Nuys, not far from the 170 Freeway. NoHo is a pretty nice area. Charles is right about the location - everywhere is convenient, except for the beach. I still think Burbank proper is a step up from other parts of the Valley, but I like NoHo.
