Watching the video again it's not clear how this fight began. He was holding himself before he walked over to you- you had an encounter before the show started? Why did you keep saying "mite"　(見て) to him?

Culturally, if you just said sumimasen (whether you mean it or not) he might have left without escalating. He seemed to be blaming you for not looking where you were going and telling him "sho ga nai" enraged him.

Especially if they have made up their mind to pursue a point, they will not stop, regardless if you were 100% right or not. Booze will play a large role in this, but sometimes they are just bonkers. Sometimes it is with an audience and this can exacerbate the so-called problem greatly. They seem bound to show the on-lookers that they are teaching the barbarian a lesson and will send him back to the black ships and away from the land of enchantment. You cannot win and any amount of sumimasens will not get there because his mind was made up about you before he ever met you. If you are unlucky enough to encounter one of those guys, you will probably end up having to knock him on his ass to be done with him. That is the only form of cultural exchange that these types understand.

Irrespective of whether a drunk and/or deranged jerk deserves to get his ass kicked, if the cops show up and there are no J-witnesses to back up your story you can expect the cops to take the Japanese person's side. I wouldn't expect the vid you took to prove much of anything either way.
Having lived many years in Tokyo I can understand the urge to level some jackass who expects you cede the entire path when he is approaching you, looks at you and spits, mutters under his breath when you walk by, or any of the other myriad subtle or unsubtle insults you might encounter as a gaijin in Japan. Nevertheless, no matter how much they deserve it you are better off not succumbing to that urge. Use force only when truly threatened, and if you are still able to hold on to the camera with one hand you probably aren't in much danger. Even then, if you can get out of the situation without actually hurting the other party you will probably be better off. Unless they are chinpira or black truck boys (who will practically never throw down unless the odds are clearly in their favor, because deep inside they are blustering cowards), most regular Japanese adult males will only engage in physical assault when drunk or mentally ill.
Naturally this rule applies outside of Japan as well. In fact, compared to London, New York, or Bangkok, Tokyo is probably one of the safer places to get into pointless physical confrontations.

I've lost my temper in Japan on occasion and regretted it the next day because I think how easily I could have avoided it. I can't speak for other parts of the country but Tokyo, at least, is a place where you can step away from conflict fairly easily. Gomen nasai and a nod defuses almost any situation. The difficult thing is dealing with the idea that you "backed down". If that is going to cause you mental trauma then then you might be in for a few rough times. If you are on a visa and not a Japanese national then the dice are loaded against you if you let something escalate so it is almost always in your best interests to let it go.

Therein lies the problem. It's easy to say walk away but bottling things up isn't healthy either. I remember some of my early days in Japan watching foreigners cross a road when the the signal hadn't changed and assuming they didn't know the form. A bit longer in country and I realized that most of the guys walking against the red were long-timers who just happened to have been fed-up of playing the game that day.

I've seen posts on here from FG members who want to rip the Japanese nation a new arsehole. If that's all they have to say here then I quickly lose interest but one of the functions of a board like this is so people can vent frustration online without feeling like they need to go out and punch someone in public. It may not always seem easy to keep your cool but you are definitely better off trying.

On the situation in the video, I don't know if you were right or wrong and I'm not sure if you know. I think you were probably in a mood for a ruck whatever the provocation and maybe the other guy was too. You certainly had more to lose than him if it turned out badly so I hope you can find ways out of that situation in the future.

I'm glad you posted the clip because it is part of what happens here to FGs whether through our own fault or the sheer bad luck of coming across a dickhead with a point to prove. Anyone planning on staying in Japan for any length of time needs to know that both are possible and you need to be able to deal with your own red mist as much as someone else's.
