Quotes:
...........Oddest of all is that "occupied" is rendered as "convenient usage middle" 便用中. The Japanese do not express thoughts the way we do. We learn words, plus rules for combining parts of speech into sentences; they learn combinations of words that express specific abstract concepts. This medium offers nothing approaching the expressive range of English. How could such a technological giant muster itself on this preposterous basis?...............

'Occupied' is 使用中 not 便用中, if he keep want to translate one kanji by one kanji, and further more in wrong kanji , then it will definately sound odd. And by the way, non smoking is 禁煙 not 煙禁....

ok about that word 子, it means child whether slanting or not. Anyway I notice that Bruce hasn't corrected some mistakes, like from the above passage, even though it was pointed out 3 years ago. I am wondering if that PM is from Bruce..

ginko (bank) on the site is two characters, not 3 as it is written.
銀行 not 金艮行

Ha!!!! Bruce, if you're around, this is utterly indefensible. I challenge you to find anything from an academic linguist to corroborate this.

1. Japanese has characters (and particles) which only serve a grammatical purpose
2. "They" also learn words (unlike you, Japanese don't read words one kanji or radical at a time), plus rules for combining parts of speech into sentences.
3. "This medium offers nothing approaching the expressive range of English. "- prove it. Give me a sentence in English that cannot be expressed in Japanese. Some concepts may be expressed more elegantly in one language than another, so no demerits for style. Did you know there are novels, and even poetry in Japanese?

I still kinda think the old man looks more like somebody wearing old man make up rather than a real old man though...

and the kid is kind of a weird androgynous homely too..:hehe:

Maybe he misheard and they were actually saying "shôbu".

(PS thanks to whoever caused this thread to pop up from obscurity, very amusing!).

Pardon me for reviving an 18 year old thread. But this is funny (to me). Something reminded me of this guy today. And somehow I remembered his name. So I googled him. He seems to have gotten in a bit of trouble with the law (I’m pretty sure this is the same guy, for a few reasons):

https://coconutcreeknews.net/helpful-ne ... 60-169.htm

September 14, 2018
Thanks to some caring Publix employees, police were able to build a case against a man who allegedly used a blind man’s debit card to make charges and get cash back for himself.
..

On September 11, Bruce Wilner, 55 was arrested on four felony charges:
Grand Theft>$300<$5000,
Illegal use credit card-more 2x in 6 months goods $100+
Fraud-attempt use ID of another person without consent
Abuse elderly or disabled adult without great harm

Here’s the original brilliant travel journal entry: http://cgibin.erols.com/bdwilner/.../japan/

:keyboardcoffee:

Florida is definitely not sending their best...who posts pictures of their rail pass with full info and passport number on the net? I'm sure he thought his ID was stolen by l33t hackorz but he handed it to the world. I definitely want to visit this Dijunii Ranzo he speaks of, is it new?

Seriously though, stealing from a blind senior, the morals on this guy need to be quarantined. Maybe some ivermectin? I heard it works on parasites.

Remind me to never get on the wrong side of Omae Mona, who knows what 2040 holds for me.

Different to the usual Debito stuff

https://infogalactic.com/info/Debito_Arudou
?
https://encyclopediadramatica.online/Arudou_Debito

If you’ve ever had to endure a Tokyo commute at rush hour, you may not get the sense that the Japanese are very happy.
https://www.japantimes.co.jp/podcast/hey-japan-happy/
However, Japan Times senior staff writer Alex K.T. Martin has been keeping track of the mood of the nation, and he thinks the country could be a lot happier than we are usually led to believe.
