Reinstall the device.

This is a legacy root service that didn't create a device object.

CLick start, right click my computer, properties, hardware, device manager, scroll down until you find DVD/CDROM drives, right click the CDROM, click uninstall. Reboot.

Now if I knew what brand of CDROM and what model # I could find you an updated driver...

BUt until then, just try to let windows install it after the reboot.

Oh well that did`nt work.
It said that new hardware was found after I rebooted, but same problem

Okay, that IS very strange. Can you tell us what company is responsible for the device driver? If you bring up the device's property tab in the Device Manager menu, and select driver, it will tell you.

My guess is that when you did something with Adaware, it must have blown out one of the required files. If you remove the INF file for that driver, it should go back and use the standard Microsoft driver on your next reboot.

anyway the driver make is VOB computersysteme GmbH ver. 5,0,0,1
and yes I downloaded a VOB product not long ago...a cd burner and then uninstalled it.
but sorry for being a PC dummy, i cant find a INF file

Try rollback. If that doesn't work, the INF file is in your windowsinf folder. Use the search tool in Windows to look for all files in that directory with the word VOB in them. Those are the INF files you should toss out.

If the driver rollback fails,
you might try a system restore, to return the computer back to the state in which the drivers were installed.

Further, are you having problems with two drives? As the brands and model number you listed are for a NEC DVD and a LG CDROM... are both drives experiencing issues with the driver installation?

try the system restore, that will undo whatever you did to make them stop functioning to begin with.

Also try the driver update for the drive I posted above. that may help as well.

what I would do is a system restore. Try to go all the way back as far as you can, to the date when the drive worked. That might fix it.

have you tried the updated drivers I gave you for the LG drive?


Have you tried manually installing the driver? I mean click start, right click my computer, add hardware.. let it search..
the select to manually install it
select show all devices.

Then find the driver that suits your make and model of CDROM.

Sometimes you can get away with using a generic driver.. by the same brand. IN this case look for a CDROM LG driver, and a DVD NEC driver.

sorry didn't know you didn't know how to do a system restore.

Click start,
Click all Programs
CLick accessories
Click system tools
click system restore
click restore my computer to an earlier time.

Now another page will open up. It will have a calendar. Just find a date any date before the date that you had issues. I usually try going back about a week, and if it doesnt work, then I go back two and so on...

Try that and then we will get to the other thing about the drivers.

I don't know if it will succeed. But if it does then you are all set.

try to go back as far as you can. ON my PC I can all the way back to November 2002. ANy change you make with system restore can be undone.

Now if it still doesn't work, my question is this: Do you have the drives installed correctly? I mean are they on the same IDE ribbon cable? Do you have the jumper settings set correctly?
When you have two drives on the same cable, one must be master, the other slave.
Check that.

Next thing, try unplugging one:
Open the case up, unplug both the thin IDE ribbon cable from one drive as well as the Power supply connector on the same drive.

Reboot the PC. see if the other drive works.

If it does, then try reconnecting the other drive again (shut the PC off before opening the CASE!!!) and reboot... see if it works, if not then you have found a crap drive and it might be time to get a new one... buy a combo drive CDRW/DVD, cheap as anything. And get rid of the other drives.

But before you sell them, try reinstalling your OS. That might fix the whole problem... To reinstall, simply back up any data taht you have on your PC now, like your favorites, your Outlook contacts, your MY documents folder, and any other data you want to save.

Then pop in your windows XP disk, reboot the machine... press any key to begin the installation.

If your CDROM doesn't work, you might have to do something a tad bit illegal... to get it to work.
YOu would have to download an ISO of XP, use a virtual drive creator like DAEMON tools, mount the ISO image in a virtual drive, and run the reinstaller.

You need to try to get at least one of the drives working.
Unplug one of them.. and try reinstalling it...

Just open the case of the desktop. Then reach on teh back of one of the drives and unplug the ribbon cable and power supply connection on the CDROM.

I really feel sorry for people with wintel machines. When they get problems....they're usually REAL nightmares. (I havent known a wintel user yet that didnt have a nightmare.)

And as much baggin on macs that a lot of people do...turning the machine, off then on fixes just about every problem.

I love my mac, but its gettin long in the tooth.

Ok try this,

See if the BIOS recognizes the drive, boot to the BIOS and tell me if the CDROM shows up in the BIOS.

One other thing, when you took the case off did you check the JUMPER settings on the back of the drive?


Should look kind of like that... now you need to make sure one is MASTER and the other is SLAVE.

Make sure you have the jumper settings set correctly, otherwise they will never work. that is why I suggested you to remove one of the CDROM drives from the PC.

If you remove one, make sure the one remaining, has the JUMPER set to MASTER. Then reboot and see if the OS accepts windows XP..
