One is tempted to define man as a rational animal who always loses his temper when he is called upon to act in accordance with the dictates of reason. - Oscar Wilde

Actually, I like to see examples the other way - "eihongo"? - where a western product / person has stuffed up translating into Japanese ... and it's funny.

Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Or even some cultural blunders either way, like this one from I18nguy.com:

Honda Fitta/Jazz/Fit

Car maker Honda introduced their new car "Fitta" in the Nordic countries during 2001, only to find out that "fitta" is an old word, currently used in vulgar language to refer to a woman's genitals in Swedish, Norwegian and Danish. It was renamed to "Honda Jazz" for the Nordic market.
According to newspaper articles, Japanese ads said that "[Fitta] is small on the outside, but large on the inside".

It's now called the Honda Fit in Japanese markets ...

Movie Titles

Postby kurohinge1 » Wed Apr 20, 2005 12:58 pm

On another tangent, the rule for translating movie titles appears to be stick something about love in there :love2: , no matter what the title was :? .

From Japanese.about.com ...

Japanese.about.com (paraphrased) wrote:English Title  Japanese Title (translation)

Sleeping with the Enemy  Ai ga kowareru toki (When love is broken)

Something to Talk About  Ai ni mayotta toki (When lost in love)

Dying Young  Ai no sentaku (The choice of love)

Final Analysis  Ai to iu na no giwaku (The suspicion named love)

Out of Africa  Ai to kanashimi no hate (The end of love and sorrow)

An Officer and A Gentleman  Ai to seishun no tabidachi (The departure of love and youth)

Dead Again  Ai to shi no aida de (In between love and death)

Children of a Lesser God  Ai wa shizukesa no naka ni (Love is in the silence)

Shadow Lands  Eien no ai ni ikite (Living in the lasting love)

Mad Dog and Glory  Koi ni ochitara (When falling in love)

The Fabulous Baker Boys  Koi no yukue (The place love has gone)

As Good As It Gets  Renai shousetsuka (A romance novel writer)

Interesting observation. I guess the Japanese are starved of love, and women make most of the video choices.

Fascinating. Marketing folks are bloody clever. I reckon Japanese women control about 90 percent of spending in families so "love" must sell.

That's a classic shirt! Where can I get one?
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Engrish t-shirts work both ways... I once convinced a van load of Japanese and Taiwanese girls on a summer school field trip to buy and wear these T-shirts. :p

The pic was taken in Thailand, so your hunt will have to begin there.
