A Nikkatsu film festival is now underway at the National Film Center in Kyobashi. Lots of gangster and action flicks. I might head over there Sunday afternoon. Entry is a very reasonable 500 yen. Here is the info:

There's also an interesting season called "妄執、異形の人々 Mondo Cinemaverique" starting this Saturday at Shibuya's Cinemavera and running through September. Their tickets are 1400 yen or 1,000 yen for members.

No English subtitles but there aren't many chances to see these films in a cinema. Some of the names that stand out are Kon Ichikawa's "Ten Dark Women" about a a man whose wife and nine mistresses plot to kill him; Sadao Nakajima's "Kunoichi Ninpo", a soft porn film based on a group of female ninja who taken on the Iga ninja; Kinji Fukasaku's high camp "Black Lizard" is an Edogawa Rampo novel adapted by Yukio Mishima. The role of the female jewel thief is played by tranvestite actor Akihiro Miwa.
