NJR. Crocodile Hunter Killed in Sting

Postby American Oyaji » Mon Sep 04, 2006 2:28 pm

SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- Steve Irwin, the Australian TV presenter known as the "Crocodile Hunter," has died after being stung in a marine accident off Australia's north coast.

Australian media reports say Irwin was diving in waters off Port Douglas, north of Cairns, when the incident happened on Monday morning.

Irwin was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest, according to Cairns police sources. Irwin was filming an underwater documentary at the time. (more...)

Damn, after all the things he has done, a sting ray got him.
I feel sorry for his wife, Terri, and their young kids Bindi Sue and Bob (Steve famously held Bob over a croc once).
Irwin was the most popular Aussie in Japanese TV he is on some program almost every week on Cable TV on the Discovery Channel Japan.

This is really sad news. Even if some Australians felt he perpetuated certain embarrasing stereotypes, I think he was a great entertainer and conservationist. What a horrible way to die.

Here in NZ its the top news story (yes we have no shame).
Death was instant according to the news so i guess thats something
His wife is out in the middle of nowhere tramping so she hasnt been located - i hope someone finds her before the media gets to her.
Its a sad end to an icon of Australia and animal lovers the world over - considering his work though i guess it was only a certain amount of time before his luck ran out....

Steve Irwin: That was quite an angry croc, but I managed to escape with only a few bruises and a shattered left testicle. Next week, we'll look for more of these beautiful creatures so we can learn more about them by pissing them off immensely. Thanks for watching

I'm sure that Yahoo Serious or Mark "jacko" Johnson (http://youtube.com/watch?v=z80-Jz7M4ok) would be keen for a comeback.

Living in Cairns, the Steve Irwin news is on a five minute rotation today. I always suspected an animal would figure in his demise given his somewhat casual attitude to some of the worlds most dangerous animals, but a stingray???
I just shows, "You never know". I just hope the media lets his family grieve with some dignity, but I doubt it.

Me too.

I have no doubt that he was a much loved father & husband and I really feel for his wife & kids.

The family empire he built does a lot for wildlife conservation and, regardless of his faults, he was a great man in what he gave back. And he had a mischievous sense of humour.

This is really sad news.

I didn't realize that he was as popular in the states as he was. My daughter has been emailing all of her class mates and friends in the world that they would know and it is a major wadai!

Reportedly, his last word was, "Crikey".

No, in all seriousness, I guess the barb went straight to his heart.

I dunno man... he died quickly and he died doing something he loved. We should all be so lucky.

I feel sorry for the family and friends he left behind but I really cant be that unhappy for a guy that went out doing something he loved.

Supposedly, the video of him getting stung should be available on the web soon.

I know he may not have been very popular or well-liked in Australia, but we Americans loved the freaking guy. I think it's a "sincerity over intelligence" thing that is peculiar to the States.

Usually when celebrities die, I just hear jokes or apathetic replies from my friends and colleagues, but today I have heard nothing but "Man, I can't believe it...he was such a great guy." My J-wife is equally depressed.

I think people really admired his ability to live life to the fullest. He always came off as being genuinely sincere, unassuming, and warm-hearted.

RIP Steve

What Adhesive said rings true.
Usually I wouldn't give two squats about a celeb death.

Thing was, he was an ordinary dude with celebrity status. He didn't change what he did because he became famous.
And he was just so damn likeable.
