Bob Marley: Still Toking in Tokyo

Bob Marley's star power shines in Japan
AFP
TOKYO : His calls to return to Africa may not strike the same chord here, but Bob Marley's star power still shines in Japan, where the late reggae legend's words have been embraced by fans with different predicaments but similar feelings.

The painful restructuring of corporate Japan in the 1990s was no source of lyricism for Marley, who died in 1981, but his passion to be free against the establishment has proven inspirational for the children of Japan's new economy.
Reggae clubs and specialty music stores across Japan are holding parties to mark the birth anniversary of the Jamaican reggae icon, who would have turned 60 on February 6.

"What's so important about Bob Marley is that his messages transcend," said Eiko Furuya, who leads Reggae-ya, a group of Japanese DJs and sound crew specializing in traditional roots reggae, including the works of Marley.

"Someone must pass on his message. He taught us to fight oppressors without violence and weapons," she said, as she prepared for a club event of Marley tunes in his memory....the rest...

There was a big festival in Ethiopia. It's nice to see something good happen in Africa for a change

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/music/4239747.stm

Marley, who was behind songs such as Exodus and One Love, won global stardom with his music and helped popularise the Rastafarian religion, which venerates the late Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie.

Marley regarded Ethiopia as his spiritual home because of his religious beliefs.

His widow, Rita, said: "It has always been the wish of Bob Marley to return to Ethiopia and become a Rastafarian... and with the African Union, Addis Ababa is the capital of Africa and therefore a very symbolic place."

Jamaica and Japan see reggae ties

BBC NEWS | Americas | 9 Sept 2006
...[Japanese] love for Jamaican reggae had skyrocketed to almost cultish proportions...hundreds of Japanese who have come to the land of reggae to bury themselves in reggae music culture.
They want to drink in, and take back to Japan, the complete Jamaican reggae experience - late-night visits to the dancehalls, eccentrically dressed artists sporting dreadlocks, the lyrical poetry of the Jamaican DJs and the mixture of Bob Marley-styled culture reggae with hardcore dancehall rhythms.....more...

Better reggae pics in this
old FG thread.

More silly season news. I suspect these news have a drawer full of stories that they never used 5-10 years ago and now are employing them as page filler. As I recall, reggae was popular oh, about 10 years ago when even the hick towns in Shikoku had a reggae bars. Most of them died about 5 years ago and I haven't noticed any resurgance since.

Like country-&western music before it, reggae has become a codified cult in Japan. There are bars in Tokyo the cater to music cults for decades after a Japanese micro-boom. Sometime, I'll take you to my favorate shitkicker C&W bar in Shinjuku which is frozen in time 1974. However, reggae/dancehall had a micro-pop in popularity when Junko Bashment Kudo became All-Jamaica dancehall queen in 2003.

Check out Junko's form in YouTube videos.

There are thousands of bar in Shikoku stuck in the 1970's (my father-in-laws place in Awa Ikeda for example). But as for C&W bars, I wasn't aware that anyone in Shikoku even owned a pair of cowboy boots.
