I was expecting the worst (as one would with most any celebrities), so I was very surprised to find out he seemed down to earth. We also hail from the same hometown so we had a nice chat.

Whenever I see him he comes across as a used car salesman

Funny you mention that... he said something about trying to unload a purple corvette ]who's had too much plastic surgery.[/QUOTE]

I don't know about that, but he actually revealed to me that his hair is BULLETPROOF and saved him from attempts on his life on a few occasions.

Personally, if I had a choice between being interview by Spector or Gomes Chenbalin of Chimpan News Channel, I'd choose the chimp. More dignified, and less likely to fling feces.

I would choose Spector. Although I have not met him nor seen him on T.V. in a while, I thought he was great at explaining American logic in a way the Japanese could understand. I use to find his coments in English and Japanese interesting and well thought out. But I have also seen him in a few 'variety' programs that I thought were stupid. I hold the producers responsible for that, not Dave.

He is on that regular weekday morning TV show I ususally wake up to. You gotta give him credit for that you can't find a similar gaijin (or a Japanese equivalent couterpart for that matter) out there with the such a broad knowledge and insight on the current Japan current events. He is definitely OG (original gaijin) who was at the right place at the right time when searching for such a Japanese-speaking gaijin back in the days was such a rarity.

He has a cameo appearance on some recent US film. The name just escaped me though.

I wouldn't say the Original Gaigin as there have been myriad from all countries. But I don't know any who have had the lasting power of Dave. Must FGs are similar to J-talent. They're up for a year or so and disappear. The ones with ninki are brought back occasionally, or hunted up in a "Where are they now" type of show. Yet Dave endures and fellow FGs still hate him.

I've had the pleasure of knowing Dave for awhile and even though there are various opinions about his abilities (as displayed throughout this thread) he remains a personally good guy, suprisingly sober and loyal to his wife, which being neither really surprises me.

I don't know what is the cause of the anti-Spector movement. I suspect that in some cases it is a feeling that he is over-playing the token gaijin, or in a lot of cases, I believe it might just be plain jealousy.

I will say this, he pays for it. He and I went to the MLB season opener last year at Korakuen and he never had a moment of rest. Everyone from little old ladies to the beer vendors came by for the entire game asking him to pose for keitai pictures and sign autographs.

I missed half the game getting up and moving every thirty seconds so that granny, or a tour group from Yamanashi could get their picture taken with Dave. He smiled and said "Of course" to every request. If it had of been me, by the 20-30th request, I would have been mantan and started sorting the MFs out, but not him.

I have also seen him voluntering for a lot of charity work and support functions when various people approached him at the Ambassador's Fourth of July Party. Things that a lot of the other so called local community don't have time for. But he makes time and does it for gratis. That is why I don't have a lot of patience with people who want to put him down and have never met him or know anything about him.

Having said all that, he's still a FG'd Chicago punk that probably thinks Taro is the greatest thing since peanut butter! The downstate crowd (Salukis) rule in Illinois!

Sheee-it GB, I don't think Dave thinks much of me. Spector's boyhood home was four blocks from mine and we must have met walking the dog as kids. However, he's signed his faxes to me "a legend in my own pants" and said in the Japan Times that I was the "disturbingly confused" winner of his TV trivia contest. :p

Well, I guess he's pretty well summed you up there, eh what! You guys from the loop crowd could never be trusted to dine out without stashing silverware in the pockets!

I agree with you. I guess I am bit envious that he's probably rich and doesn't have to whore himself in eikaiwa, like, uh, like, uh...like me :( ,
but I think he is a cheesy, flakey character.

It's hard to separate the character from the person if all you see or know is the role they play!

I'm with GB. Dave is a really nice guy who has a lot of time for others. He's also a fabulously talented comic with a tremendous ability to dazzle audiences. Dave endures in the fickle entertainment world here because he's talented, he's sharp and he's accommodating. I'm a huge fan and wish him all the best. I'd love to have even a skerrick of his abilities.

Written like a writer Marvin. Ahh, but can you give me a hint on what's a skerrick? Is it possibly something that you can drink, or sleep with?

In the five years since I wrote my last post, I've come to not hate Dave anymore. He does actually seem like a guy who has his shit together and knows what he's talking about, rather than just babbling nonsense because there's a camera pointed at him. Whether I'd want to be in his shoes or not, it's impossible to deny that he got where he is by working his ass off, and I respect that.

Yes, the issue is not Dave, he is just fulfilling his karma, and more power to him. The issue is the absolute crap of JTV. Yes to that. But again, that's what the locals want, so that's what they get.

And if as you say, some local J people say Dave is not so good, then why, pray tell, why, tell me, has he remained on TV for over 15 years or so. If he wasn't selling the commericals that sell the shows, then they would take him off. They haven't. Ergo: he's just what the medium requires.

He is not a gaijin. He is a Chicago boy doing his thang in Tokyo. Welcome to the Global Village.

And money? What's money go to do with it? Nothing.

As for his eye job, nose job, eyeliner, hair color, it's just part of the job. Get over it.

All show biz people have to put up with this shite, the world over. Yes, it's silly. But Dave didn't invent it. More power to him. He deserves all the sucess he got. But again, credit his wife, she is the brains behind the entire operation. Classy lady!

:hehe: Hey Dave, nice to know all those years back ya came on here and registered to praise yourself. Why has your missus got such big fugly feet? 'She' looks otokpoi - one of them 'marriages' of convenience eh? Now fuck off forever.
