Seriously though, if you really think I should get upset and kick her out the door over some little quip she had with her best friend in highschool, I really am wondering how many relationships you had between the two of you that lasted longer than 2 weeks... She has already given up on the whole idea a loooong time ago and only brings it up to taunt me every once in a while... this whole thing is really not the issue you make it out to be.

Or maybe you are just not used to having the last say in your relationships?

...maybe you should just take what they say with a pinch of salt.. Sure they werent seriously telling you to dump your girlfriend, only taunting you :)

Ok everyone.. If you had a baby boy/girl with your lovely j-girlfriend/boyfriend, what would you name it? Would it be a j-name or an english name or a bilingual name like Naomi or Ken?

Bilingual names suck, everybody seems to be using those... what happened to the magic of second and third names? Pick one in Japanese, and another one in English or whichever is one of the native languages. Use one when you're here, use the other when you're there. I think it's nice to have at least one name that can be written in kanji, even it's a haafu kid of mine.

I wish everything would be so simple.

Bald good friend of mine named Dave was always called hage debu. Did not help that he looked like a classic Harley rider...

Or Ed? They always call him 'Ero'...

Although not a name, I always liked the Japanese word 'monppai' (full). Any Japanese word with 'mon' and 'pai' in it I like...

What it does illustrate is the power of a convenient food item to drive sales at restaurants, which have seen breakfast sales remain strong throughout the economic downturn.

"The easiest way to prepare that meal is a power window," says Harry Balzer, chief industry analyst with NPD Group, in an interview.

Lol. No, that wasn't the problem. I can't remember the exact circumstances, but I swear when I read your message, it seemed like a complete non-sequitur as if you posted in the wrong thread. And I don't remember the name being in bold, so it totally escaped me that the post was about a funny name. Either I was drunk again, or somebody is moving messages around to fuck with my head. Sorry about that.

Re: Stupid Japanese Names

Bullshit family names

Japan has a lot of family names. According to the family name directory 日本苗字大辞典, written by Motoji Niwa (1919-2006) who spent a lifetime researching family names, place names, and Japanese family crests, there are about 300,000 family names in Japan. This takes into account some kanji orthography differences and small pronunciation differences. He also said that of those 300,000 names, around 7000 of them cover around 96% of the population, meaning 4% are considered strange and rare.

On the flip side of the coin, the 10 most common names cover around 10% of the Japanese population. Given that Japan is generally considered to be a fairly homogenous population of 130 million people, it seems a bit strange that there are that many names. Another researcher of family names, Hiroshi Morioka, pointed out that some of them may be imaginational names and the actual existence of them is not yet proven. He calls such names 幽霊苗字, which literally means “ghost family name.” He thinks the number of actual Japanese family names is around 150,000, but this doesn’t consider kanji orthography or kanji pronunciation differences as separate names. He also doesn’t include the “ghost names.”

[...]

But then it starts to get weird. There are some Japanese family names that are so ridiculous that I’m forced to believe that someone was playing some kind of horrible family prank when they named themselves. Cow Poop (牛糞: Ushikuso), Horse-Butt (馬尻: Umajiri), and Boar-Crotch (猪股: Inomata/Imata) are actual people in Japan. If they wanted a memorable name, they’ve certainly achieved it, but I can’t imagine what it’s like to grow up with a name like that as a child.

And taking it back to the name that started this thread way back in 2006, this guy's name is awesome.

Yu Kakusaka’s lifetime of service in Japan has included valuable contributions in the areas of urban planning, e-government and international non-governmental organizations.

He began his career in urban planning with a survey of village structures in both Japan and Latin America, which led to a consultative role with the Institute of Industrial Science at the University of Tokyo. He continued his work designing Nigeria’s capital Abuja, and did architectural consulting in Singapore, Algeria, and with several municipal governments in Japan. He also established the Municipal Resource Planning Center software company with the cooperation of Japan’s Ministry of Economic Trade, and Industry.

Throughout his career, Mr. Kakusaka has also been involved with International NGO’s – from cultural anthropology work on the Yucatan Peninsula to a two year stint with Sir Edmund Hilary’s Himalayan Trust.

He received his university degrees at Tokyo University in Architecture and is currently conducting seminars at the Graduate School of Media and Governance at Keio University’s Shonan Fujisawa campus.

I'm wracking my brains as to where that was heading, but the dullard in me doesn't get past Tomika Kadohata. I'm guessing that there is a non-standard reading which makes it amusing, and I may need your help there.

LOL, I knew that guy. Just in Japan, I did not know the real meaning of his name.

Worked under him for a year or so, but his "management" abilities were far from impressive. Well, he knew how to manage a Whiskey bottle...

It doesn't sound strange to me. Actually, I find it a nice name.

It's quite common, isn't it?

When I lived in Germany, I had a Japanese aquaintance called Tani-san (谷さん). She married a German guy called "Lange" and started using the name "Lange-Tani". So I started calling her Hase-san, because "Lange" in German means "長い". (It took her a while to get the joke).
