Kyodo via Yahoo: Former juryo wrestler punches opponent after bout
A wrestler who used to belong to sumo's elite second-tier punched his opponent in the face after losing a bout the previous day in the lower tier makushita division at the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament, sumo officials said Monday. Kotokanyu, a 40-year-old native of Hokkaido who once wrestled in the juryo division, lost a match after exchanging slaps with his 19-year-old opponent Ikioi on Sunday. Reuters: Embarrassed sumo wrestler retires after punch-up
Japan's longest-serving active sumo wrestler has retired in shame after punching an opponent in the face, Japanese media reported on Wednesday. A disgruntled Kotokanyu saw red after losing a bout to 19-year-old Ikioi in Tokyo at the weekend, storming into the locker room and punching him. The highly respected Sadogatake, who runs the sumo stable Kotokanyu belonged to, submitted the wrestler's retirement papers to the Japan Sumo Association (JSA) on Tuesday.
