R Burger? Roppongi Burger w/ STD Sauce?

Postby GuyJean » Sun Sep 24, 2006 7:29 pm

I noticed a new burger shop opened in Roppongi:

R Burger:

Image
Why are the buns white? Are they made of rice? I looked around the site but didn't see a reason for the buns being albino..

The sauces look fucking Japanese-weird; plum, wasabi, etc..

Rat Burger
Rot Burger
Rape Burger
Rutabaga Burger
no, no, no it's gotta be a Rice Burger and that's why it's white.

Some food sites say the Revolting Burger got its name from "revolution." Supposedly, the R-Burgers combine Wa-fu methods using of the buns which the butter and the egg are not used and are steamed Japanese-style, as a "special feature."

BTW: Notice how all the links to, "SHOP INFO", "ABOUT RBURGER', "CAMPANY INFO'(sic) are dead.

The place is being operated by a ramen and gyoza company called Taroko and the "R" apparently stands for "revolution". The buns are like Chinese steamed buns - which would explain why they are white - and the company makes them without using butter or egg. A Taroko spokesman says they chose Roppongi because it was the home of the recently-closed Hamburger Inn.

The third one - the gray one - is pork in a goma bun. I'll pass. The maguro wasabi mayonnaise doesn't sound so hot either. A Minami Aoyama branch is set to open in October. I just don't see this working.

I don't think I like the idea of a steaming burger coming apart in my hands when I try to put it down.

From what I read on the R-Burger website, it seems those white buns have the same consistency as large nikuman.

I'll give the Silas-albino-fuck burgers a try.. Looks like a stupid gimmick, but that usually works in Japan.. As long as they hire people to wait in line outside, it'll be the next big hit in Tokyo..

The slightly unnerving logo of the new Pakutch! burger due to open later this month in Dogenzaka, Shibuya. Like R Burger in Roppongi, the joint is being opened by a ramen chain.

I think the US government needs to come up with a panel that authenticates burger restaurants. A nikuman bun is a fucking sin and should not be allowed.

Burger - No Burger

Postby DrP » Thu Dec 14, 2006 12:06 am

This is exactly why I have friends bring Carl's Junior double bacon cheese sets to me from LA. Even after 8hrs in the air, still miles ahead of any shitburger sold in Japan. Believe me, I've tried them all - from 2000Y 'gourmet' to 200Y Micky D's, Japan takes the lead as the absolute worst place in the world to eat a burger. Hell, I've had better DOG burgers in VietNam!!

http://www.tokyotonite.com/index.php?op=ViewArticle&articleId=45&blogId=1

Japan Wendys - shit
Mos(s) Burger - the name says it all
Micky's - even slacker than the original
Lotte - what the f* is it a contest?
Freshness - in your dreams

American friends of mine seem to rate Franklin Avenue in Gotanda when I've taken them there. They also do deliveries.

Use to be quite a few Carl's Junior's in the Kansai area although I have been to any lately, they were quite good. Their only outlet that I have seen in Kanto used to be near the Tomei by the Hakone exit short of Numazu.

I'm afraid they may be declining. There are still a few Bob's Big Boy outlets around Tokyo.

Since the death of the Roppongi Johnny Rocket's, Homeworks is about the best burger in that area.

Now I have to go check out Mulboyne's Franklin Street place! Brits might produce the best BSE, but only the Yanks can put it in a burger of merit.

Interesting the way they talk as if BK has never been in Japan before. Was Lotte involved with it the first time it failed. I remember that the BK's one day turned into Lottes. How does that work having two competing burger chains?

The change of ownership is likely a factor. Burger King was owned from 1988 by UK drinks group Grand Met and was sold four years ago to a US private equity consortium including Texas Pacific Group (who are currently in the bidding for Ashikaga Bank). They floated the company on the NYSE in May of this year. The current owners have never been in Japan and probably don't wish to be associated with the previous foray although, inevitably, that distinction will be lost on everybody else.

Karkalash is WAAAAAY better in the 'Pongi

[floatr]Image[/floatr]Oh man, Johnny Rockets was such a welcome TREAT during my first trip to Japan, like 10 years ago. Just goes how much you go jonesin' for burgers after being on the road for awhile.

I hear you expats never really eat burgers after awhile. True?

I wouldn't eat that white bun stuff. I'd try to find a better J-facsimile or McDoobs. Besides, in Roppongi, you want to eat from the "Karkalash" trucks dontcha? And I'll have some Crab Juice with that too.

I went there a few weeks ago for lunch and that place is damned good. We waited for a good half hour for the tables to clear. Definitely upgrade the burger size to the largest they got!

Well, strictly speaking, it was the other way around. Both companies were looking for a Japan partner and decide that they were the best fit. Lotte made their pitch because they want some new strategies for their Lotteria sites in the same way that McDonalds experimented (unsuccessfully) with Pret a Manger in Japan.

Franklin Ave. in Nishi-Azabu is closed. Try their Shinagawa/Gotanda place if you want.

The best hamburgers I've had in Tokyo (and my reference burger is the Corner Bistro burger in NYC) don't match the ones I've had in the US.

However, good burgers can be had at:

1) T. Y. Harbor Brewery on Tennoz Isle.

2) I forget the name of the place, but it's near Yoyogi-Uehara and I can take you there but I don't remember the name

3) I think it is the Imperial Hotel's bar, 2nd floor, great hamburger there. Not cheap tho.

1) Never tried them there although I do like the place. If the burgers are good, then they should also be OK at the Beacon Urban Chop House since it's the same chef behind the menus.

2) Do you mean the West Park Cafe?

3) That would be the Old Imperial Bar.

Anyone have any thoughts on how the burgers rate at the Tokyo American Club?

2- YES! West Park Cafe.

3- Yes, the Imperial Bar. Good burger there.

I'm headed to TAC for dinner on Saturday. If there is a burger on the menu, I'll try it. I do not have high hopes. The kitchen at TAC is not well-known for anything as far as I am concerned.

I agree that TAC isn't known for its food, so their burgers probably won't impress. However, TAC's food is way better than the food at the Foreign Correspondents' Club. Nasty stuff over there.

Bird, I hate to hear that about the FCC. Many years ago, in their old site by the old American Pharmacy in Marunouci, the FCC had a renown kitchen and was where the elite would meet.

Tac has a newish F&B manager and a new head of the American Room (Is that the fine dining restuarant? - I forget) - well they are new since you left town. The food is not too bad these days and it does have an impressive wine list.
