Nokia n93 great but hangs !! what to do??

Postby F_O_R_E_X » Thu Oct 12, 2006 3:19 pm

Hi to all you high tech guys out there ??

i'm well knowlegded about trading but i dont know alot about tech stuff.

Always invite my relative (electronic engineer) to sort out my tech queries,
but even he cant help me on this one.

I just bought a brand new Nokia N93 (made in Finland) and upgraded the

memory to 1Gig (Ridata mini SD)

After less than a month the unit frequently hangs ...., something like watching

the SCREEN MELT !!

sometimes i have to switch off and on again. one time i had to goddam take
out the battery and re-insert !!

questions:

A) what causes it to hang.... i heard that many of the N Series hang?
is it coz of the larger memory or due to corrupted files etc??

B) any1 know which is the best anti-virus for this unit?
someone suggested " AVG " ?

C) will an anti - virus prevent the HANGINGS ??

D) is anti-virus the best provention ??

Have you installed 3rd party software recently? This can sometimes cause problems.

The freezes you see are just caused by software bugs and yes sometimes it is necessary to pull out the battery to reset it. There is no virus or nor do you need antivirus software for Symbian OS series 60. The problems are just due to some software glitches which are not uncommon.

If it really bugs you, then contact Nokia customer support and perhaps they can arrange for a upgraded software flash. This is where they update the software in your phone for hopefully a less buggy version. Usually the first release of any new phone will have some bugs.

If you do this, back up your old data onto the memory card (find from Application Shield -> Tools -> memory card) and choose back-up onto memory card from the Options menu. When you get your phone back, choose "restore from memory card" from the same menu so that you can restore all of your phone numbers, contact details, calendar items etc.

Hey thanks darling, your info very helpful!

i confirm it's the Symbian OS series 60 !

yes i did install some ringtones thru "bluetooth" from a N70 and a nokia 6280

recently.

I bought the made in finland (40 usd's more expensive than the made in china) coz i was hoping it's more reliable.

regarding the anti-virus, are you sure no need to install?

maybe i can first scan any internet downloads with my existing laptop anti_virus software AVG and
AVAST before transferring to my n93 no??

anyway thanks again!

Hey "darling"!!

I work with Symbian OS everyday. You do not need antivirus software. Plus any virus written for windows is not going to affect Symbian.

But getting a ringtone from an unknown source is dodgey - turn off your bluetooth when you are not transferring files.

The hardwar from Finland or China will be the same. The software version is what is causing you problems. Call Nokia support centre and try to find a place where you can flash a newer version of the s/w.

She actually owns the company and don't call her darling because she carries a straight razor! However, since she is a shacho and drinks, that is in my class. I might even make a pass at her if I was into white women.

When did I call Gomi my "darling?"
I may have called her that in person somewhere some time ago, but certainly not on here where it will remain as a permanently damning evidence.

It's amazing how the 5100 was probably by far the longest best-selling model ever. It sure is a piece of shit compared to today's standard.. monocrhome LCD, no camera, etc. At one point and I believe they still are recycling the phone and resending them back to China, India, and other third world countries.

I wonder if this is still the standard "free" phone they are giving out when signing contracts.

Well, I am going to have to think about the obvious merits of a "might". The first question would then obviously be how much does the shacho pay the fukushacho? I don't know if you were aware of it, but YBF is very expensive to cure! Large investment in white mice, etc., etc.

Gomigirl i erased the darling from the quote:

rgrdng my n93:
i reformatted the 1gig Ridata Mini SD memory which is quite simple.
it has not hanged since then!

You sure know alot about the n93 OS .....

1) would you be so kind as to tell me
if there is any way of checking the system for errors (a bit like doing a
system check with windows xp?)

2) when i upgraded/expanded my n93 memory to 1 gig, the idiot sales
guy extracted the memory chip without 1st switching off the unit !!
i was trying to stop him but it was too late !
What sort of temporary or permanent damage could this have caused
and if the memory device damaged, are the any remedies??

please gimme some hope ?
i bought the 1 gig from an electronic shop not from the service center (my silly mistake)

There is no real need to as Symbian isn't subject to the same errors as Windows XP. :p

You can reformat the whole phone but that is very dangerous as you will lose all of your data. But that is only necessary if you upgrade the s/w and that can only be done by a service centre and they will format it for you after it has been reflashed.

This is not a problem - you can hot swap the memory cards without turning off the phone. Sounded like your problem was due to a new card that wasn't reformatted before use. This often happens with memory cards. Fear not my friend, there is no damage. You can swap out the memory cards at any time when the phone is running. The phones are built to withstand this.

The only issue is if you have an application running that is installed onto the memory card. But again, the phone can withstand this. Whenever you are in doubt though, just turn the phone off and on again and let it reboot and all errors will be repaired automatically. As I said, this is a robust OS built for use and abuse unlike windows.

Again, fear not this is not a problem. But just to be on the safe side, next time you use a memory card format it before use. You can format this via the application "Memory card" which should be in the tools folder.

i'm getting a little pissed off with this nokia n93 hanging.
hopefully nokia can bring out some effective remedy/solution??

many nokia n series but the n93 freezes for as long as two minutes
after sending recieving many sms's !
