This should have been a pole from the get-go.

It's such a bad photo it is hard to say. But from what I can see Michelle Ito would be my pick.

She is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of University of California, San Diego with a bachelor's degree in human development.

Having graduated from that same school myself and I probably went to school at the same time as she did (her age being 25 and mine 26), I should know her.. but unfortunately I don't recognize her at all.

2006 Candidates

Postby kurohinge1 » Fri Jul 21, 2006 1:36 pm

ImageIt's on again, and here are the candidates for the 12-20 August 2006 Nisei Week:

Image

2006 Candidates

L to R (back row): Callen Kitaura, East San Gabriel Valley Japanese Community Center; Liane Takano, Little Tokyo Lion's Club; Lisa Shimabukuro, Orange County Nikkei Coordinating Council

L to R (middle row): Colleen Suyenaga, West Los Angeles JACL & Aux and Venice Japanese Community Center; Chelsea O'Neill, San Fernando Japanese Community Center and Coordinating Council

(front row): Stefanie Fujinami, Japanese Restaurant Association of Southern California

It seems someone was smitten by Colleen Suyenaga - at least, back in 2001. ;)

Anyway, read the Bios.

Place your bets.

My money is on Lisa Shimabukuro (with Callen Kitaura a close second).

Well, the FG favourite (with 3 out of 3 votes) was second . . . or "first princess" in Nisei-Week-speak:

At the 66th Annual Nisei Week Coronation Ball on Saturday, August 12, Liane Kristen Takano [below] was crowned the 2006 Nisei Week Queen. Lisa Shimabukuro was crowned 1st Princess . . . more

Kochirakoso, Mulboyne-san. I'm sorry for leaving it so late, sempai.

Now, let's see some FG predictions.

I think I'm "0 for 2" in this competition to date, but for 2007 I'm picking Jennifer Kiku Minami.

Get excited, because the 2008 Nisei Week Queen and Court Candidates must be due for annoucement any day now.

As a bit of an aperitif, below are the the "qualifications" required for candidacy together with unofficial explanations (in bold) as to how those rules should be interpretted in the real world.

Maybe one day the candidates will include a young, female and hafu FG member (which seem to be as common as four-leaf clovers).

Nisei Week Queen and Court Rules & Regulations wrote:
Qualifications

Age: Candidate must be at least 19 years old and not older than 25 years old on the day of the coronation, August 16, 2008. (NO "makeinu")

Citizenship: Candidate must have been (A) born or naturalized in the United States or (B) legally living in the United States as a permanent resident. (If you can locate more than 4 other countries on a world map, you do not qualify. :p )

Nationality: Candidate must be a minimum of fifty percent (50%) Japanese ancestry. Candidate will supply supporting documentation, including parents' names and birth certificate, if requested. (For particularly cute applicants, racial scaling may be used to assist in qualification, as long as you have at least one Japanese ancestor anytime since the Heian period (794&#8211])

Marital Status: Candidate must not be married, divorced or separated, and must not have children. Candidate may be engaged to be married, but in the event that she is awarded a Nisei Week title she must remain unmarried for the duration of her reign. ([B]No "kids". Sorry Greji.
;) )

Conflicts of Interest: Candidate, as a member of the Nisei Week Court, must not enroll or participate in any other beauty or popularity contests from the date of submission of the Nisei Week Queen Candidate Application and Profile (the "Application") to the official completion of the Nisei Week Court's reign (Coronation Ball of the following year), without the expressed written consent of the Nisei Week Foundation. (This FG thread does not count)
