Can someone recommend a manga?

No robots battling aliens, no pre-pubescent up-skirts, no sports heroes, no high school biker gangs - just a good yarn! Are there any out there? Want a place to start. Cheers.

Jump, has collections of episodes most ok, some great, Bleach is probably the best its about ghost hunters(society).
Monster is pretty good too, its another weekly. Blood if you like action.
I know lots more, if you are into politics, business, mahjong, ghosts, drama etc tell me what you are interested in or an aspect of japanese society.

Years ago when I was a language student and manga was just becoming a big thing, everyone used to push manga at me. I looked at a few, but they all sucked. I couldn't believe people were actually interested in such rubbish. But I decided to give it the old college try. I asked some of the local otaku to recommend a good manga to me. I said I wasn't interested in scifi or monsters or vampires or porn or any crap like that, just find me something I could read and enjoy. They recommended Tezuka's "Adolf."

It sucked.

If you're not averse to samurai material, you might want to try Blade of the Immortal, or even more classic stuff like Lone Wolf and Cub. Tezuka's Black Jack
series is good too.( The title character is an unlicensed surgeon who can cure patients orthodox doctors can't. I've only seen some of the anime, but if it's any indication, the manga must be astounding.)
