Rockin' Tokyo?

Postby Cunner » Mon Oct 16, 2006 8:28 pm

Hi Guys'n'Girls out there.
Does anyone know any club/bar/however you call such a place, where they play some decent rock/indie/alternative music here in Tokyo? Just for great parties except from this mainstream hip-hop, black and techno stuff?
Wanna go rocking again...

And no, I don't mean karaoke ;).

Thanks in advance.

Basically, the hard rock (not hair metal) and punk clubs in Tokyo are in Shinjuku (Loft, Antiknock, Club Doctor), Shimo-kitazawa(been awhile, I forget the names of the clubs there), Sangen-jaya(Heaven's Door), and Koenji(Gear and 20000GV). Higashi-Koenji has Club UFO. Just Google, Yahoo them. Shibuya has a buncha little 6-8 tatami mat sized live rock clubs, but I'm over 30, hence, not allowed in Shibuya anymore.:(

The best place to look for English listings is here. It's got a good mix of the Japanese and foreign shows.

All the places mentioned so far are really live houses where you'd expect to see bands performing rather than a DJ playing rock/indie selections. I'm sure they have some DJ nights but you'll find more in the monthly schedules of Club Wire in Shinjuku and Milk in Ebisu. The best places for those kinds of sounds are bars - from small places like Garageland in Shibuya to larger venues like Red Shoes in Minami Aoyama. Also, Rolling Stone closed down last year but has since relocated to Yasukuni Dori and still plays the same sets.

Ok, I get it. I misread the request. In addition to Mulboyne's suggestions I'd toss in SuperDeluxe. They used to have DJs playing a wide range of stuff. But now they seem to booking more live acts. Check the schedule to see what's on. It would seem to me that Garageland in Shibuya would suit your needs the best.

Great suggestions, have been looking for an escape from hiphop/dance hell myself. And how about funk, any places one can expect to hear some funky sounds? And with at least a smallish dancefloor?
