Japan bashes Hong Kong vessel from disputed islands

Postby Buraku » Sun Oct 29, 2006 4:05 am

Japan's coast guard prevented ethnic Chinese activists on Friday from landing on Japanese-held islands also claimed by China and Taiwan, a fresh reminder of territorial disputes that dog Tokyo's ties with its neighbors.

An aging fishing trawler had set sail from Hong Kong on Sunday carrying some 20 protesters -- from Hong Kong, the U.S. and Canada and elsewhere -- who claim China's sovereignty over the islands.

Wow.... they sprayed it with water and that was enough to make it go away :)

I imagine they were lucky, too... just about anywhere else in the world step one would be a shot across the bow, and step two a few shots just below the waterline.

Nevermind him he's lost.

What it boils down to is this, the Russians are already sitting on the Kurile Islands so there's no way that the Japanese can grab their claim and remove them with bloodsheed, but Russia is still one of the most powerful forces on the planet and could wipe Tokyo off the map in seconds. Now if Abe or Ishihara somebody wants to bribe the Ruskies for fishing rights I suppose it would be possible.

The Japanese could perhaps take Takeshima/Dokdo off the Koreans but it would require a battle, and United States avoids the issue. Upon Japan's defeat in World War II the Japanese lost the island. During the 50s the South Koreans ordered its army to enforce its claim on the islets, there was shooting and over 320 fishing boats were abducted or detained but later released in 1965 in return for the release of 472 Koreans imprisoned in Japan. almost 1,000 Korean citizens list the islets as their residence, while over 2,000 Japanese do the same. However, only two people, a married Korean couple, are actual permanent residents - Kim Sung-do, who moved into Dokdo with his wife

The Chinese have one of the most powerful military forces in the world but they are only strong in their own backyard and their Navy would not be any match for Japan's....a war like this would hurt China unless the Chinese bring out the big boys like their missiles and long range bombers....plus China is trying to look nice and friendly before the 2008 Olympics. On the Senkaku/Diaoyu Island issue - the Japanese say as the victor in the 1894-95 war with Ching (China), Japan seized these islands along with Taiwan and the Penghu Islands and incorporated them into Okinawa Prefecture as Japanese territory. The Chinese say Japan's claim of ownership over the Diaoyu Islands is groundless.
