Tokyo shopping advice

Postby 2triky » Wed Nov 08, 2006 6:00 am

I have a friend leaving for Tokyo in two weeks who is interested in purchasing merchandise relating to famous actors/actresses in Japan (i.e. photobooks, DVDs, CDs, posters, magazines, etc.) Does anybody have any recommendations regarding specialty shops or particular bookstores who carry such goods in abundance? Thank you very much.

most shopping malls in Japan will have at least one shop selling just that type of stuff. Just follow the girls in the loose socks.........
Seriously though your friend will not have a hard time finding a place where ever they are in Tokyo.

sorry i am terrible with the names of shops. I lived in Yokohama and they have these shops in the Vivre shopping malls, tokyo will probably be the same. There is also plenty of these shops in the shopping area around Shibuya Station.

Most bookshops will have what your friend is looking for. In Tokyo, one of the largest stores is Kinokuniya in the Takashimaya Times Square annex near the south exit of Shinjuku station. Other large stores are Maruzen, a few minutes walk from the Marunouchi North exit of Tokyo station, and Book 1st, across the road from Tokyu Bunkamura in Shibuya.

For cheaper copies, your friend might want to look out for a chain of secondhand bookshops called Book Off. They have hundreds of stores nationwide and most of their merchandise is as good as new.

If your friend's tastes are a bit more old fashion (60's onward), look for a place called Abeno Stamps and Coin. Despite what the name suggest, it's a great place for film memorabiliia and actor photos from yesteryear.

http://www.japantravelinfo.com/animeotaku/otaku_goods.pdf

Here's a list of "otaku goods" shops put out by the JNTO...While alot of this is toy related, idol worship is a sideline for many otaku and there are some listings for Idol shops (namely Marbuell Do, which apparently focuses more on older J idols) and possibly Project Hello, which would likely have more recent folks (although I haven't been to either one so I can't say for sure). Possibly the Nakano Broadway building (it a building of many small shops) might also be of interest...There will be alot of toy and anime stuff but there are likely a few shops with more an Idol bent.
