Christmas in Japan

Postby canman » Wed Nov 08, 2006 5:29 pm

Perhaps this is a little off the first topic, but can anybody explain to me why so many foreigners living in Japan hate Christmas here. There was a story on Crisscross a few days ago about how many places are turning on their Christmas illumination. There were so many writers bitching about how Japan has ruined Christmas and its not their holiday and they should also celebrate Ramadan etc.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I love Christmas and yes the music in the stores does get a bit annoying in November, but I think its a lot more fun than having nothing. Anyway I celebrate Christmas my way with my family, as close to a traditional Christmas as possible, so I don't really care what other people do. But I ask you do you dislike Christmas in Japan? Why or why not.

I LOVE the way Japan does all the lights - Japanese illumination out-does anything we do here in kiwi-land (the Illumination "road" near Tokyo Eki was incrediable). The decorations are usually quite tasteful and i enjoying having at least the feel of christmas. There was plently of christmas deocrations to buy so i was able to make my place look festive and the international shops and department stores like sogo usually have a good supply of festive foods.
Christmas Day itself i didnt really like. Why? because the build up was there but the day itself was just another day except for the overwhelming number of young couples who made it into a 2nd valentines day(dont even try to go to a mall or the movies)
I managed to make an OK day by having a roast meal and then drinking with friends but it just wasnt the same. I think as long as you are with some friends its OK.
Christmas in Japan isnt bad its just really weird!

I prefer Japanese Xmas..

Postby sillygirl » Wed Nov 08, 2006 6:15 pm

Used to love going shopping and hearing Matsu - moto, ki - yoshi sung to Silent Night in my fave drug store.

Still cracks me up thinking about it.

I have always hated Xmas because of the weather and I hate green, gold & red. Best Xmas's I had were when I lived in Thailand.

Decorations have been up since October over here....Xmas adverts annoying, miss the J version with cake and KFC!!!

Thankfully, I'm off to Italy for Xmas, gonna get fat off momma's cooking
