Add Michael Crichton, subtract Gregory Clark who has written columns from a reactionary Japanese perspective, add Karel vanWolfren. Not sure why you consider oppressed minorities (Buraku, Koreans) Japan-bashers.

He found out about after 1 mth after we started dating - he is of the older generation - you know the ones that in Japan tend to dislike foreigners and in the West dislike Germans and the such and can't seem to distinguish between told what to do and orders and from innocent people..

Doesn't have much of a choice really so guess he is coming around to the idea.

i thought the biggest Japan basher would have to be the South Korean Pm after he bashed Abe about the WW2 when they were talking about Kim Jong Ill a few weeks back.
will the last one out please turn the light off.....

I think that one was "Debt of Honor".
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

While I think Debito has good points, I think his way of going about it is screwy.

I'll go ahead and nominate the greater part of the Parisian service industry; I've never heard so many references to the Japanese as "ants" as in Paris restaurants, shops, and hotels.

And of course, Edith Cresson, France's President c. 1991, made the "ant" comparison quite publicly and famously - though De Gaulle's reference to Japan being a "nation of transistor salesmen" still wins hands down.
"If there's a river, we'll dam it, and if there's a tree, we'll ram it - 'cause we Japanese are talkin' progress!"

However you got to take the point that Debito ain't living in an international urbanized area like Osaka or Tokyo, he lives in hick-ville Hokkaido. Even great efforts like hakucho bridges and record long tunnels haven't brought this place out of 'the sticks' or boondocks

I disagree.
I think a "basher" is someone who has a mental attitude completely opposed to what they are bashing and never brings up any redeeming quality.

So a Japan basher by that definition would be someone who always says something negative about Japan and never a positive or their negative statements far outweight the positive ones.

EXAMPLE: Charles is a Aussie basher. Certifiably so. He takes every opportunity he can to say something bad about Australia or Australians.

I know that is an extreme example, but it makes my point.

That is not true at all. For example, whenever I say that it is every ozzie's desire to drink until they are lying in a gutter in a pool of their own vomit, I say that to highlight the fact that ozzies do indeed have lofty dreams of what they can achieve in their lives, and can attain them, and in fact, do so with regularity.
This is nothing but an observation. You might as well consider me a "water basher" if I observe that water is wet.

I think you are prejudiced against ozzies. You describe my remarks as "bashing," when I clearly described this scenario as "lofty dreams," something that ozzies aspire to, akin to something holy. Who are YOU to cast aspersion on that vomit-filled gutter, a place that ozzies consider their nirvana? I can recognize the higher aspirations of ozzies to transcend their execrable circumstances and achieve a noble place in this nirvana, but you cannot.

Ok then Charles, how does your philisophy account for Australians who don't drink? I have extensive personal experience in this area, being one of them.

Subject matter aside, I like your writing style. It's sharp and witty.

I really don’t ‘get’ this continued Aussie-bashing from Chuck. If it is truly a heartfelt criticism, then its just bizzare coming from a member of country with so many of its own conspicuous cultural flaws (fundie Christian political dominance/acceptance that corporate hyper-greed is the right way/fill in your own blanks). Really, fix your own problems at home before you start taking the moral high ground against other cultures.

On the other hand, if he’s just baiting for the fun of drawing people into some delusional epic ‘War of Flame’, and he’s later going to turn around and in his high-pitched voice say “Ha ha! I poked you in the ribs until you got angry!”, well, … then it’s almost just too sad to contemplate. A grown man getting his jollies in that way. I would like to remind him that valuable minutes of his life are slowly but surely passing away while his sweaty plams are typing out false criticisms about people he doesn’t know. The phrase ‘get a life’ has no more apt use than here, I think.

The third and final possibility, is that he suffered some indignity at the hands of some Australian(s) in the past. If that is the case, and he is projecting his rage onto the whole Australian populace – well, irrational projection on that scale is what professional psychologists are paid to help you with. :D
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.
