Blade Runner Building Boom

Postby Taro Toporific » Tue Mar 11, 2003 12:21 pm

Building projects defy huge cash woe
The Japan Times / March 11
...Odd, so the discussion goes, that in the middle of one of the worst economic slumps in Japanese history, the skyline of greater Tokyo is sprouting new buildings like mushrooms on a golf course. The world's largest metropolis looks more and more like the set from "Blade Runner" than a crumbling urban wasteland.

Just wondering, do you guys like to read Sci-fi or just watch it on the telly?

I love Arthur C. Clarke and Robert Silverburg. Ray Bradbury kicks ass too, but he's not really sci-fi, even if you consider the Martian Chronicles. Blade Runner kicked ass though.

Arthur C Clark is a bit out there for my taste. He's good. But more than a little strange.

Heinlein is my favorite classic Sci-Fi author.

C.J. Cherryh is my favorite contemporary. She rocks SO much.
Hunter of Worlds <-- one of my persoanl favorites.

Then there is Anne McCafferey. (Dragonriders of Pern) I think they are going to make a film of this one.

I like both. Tele(vision) and book form.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

SF

Postby DJEB » Wed Mar 12, 2003 1:10 am

Thank god for CG. We can finally get SF movies that aren't cheesy. I just hope that the Matrix Reloaded will be half of what I hope it will be.

For the readers, check out some of Heinlein's stuff, particularly Stranger in a Stange Land. I'm also fond of some of the work by John Barnes (I first read him as a lark - he's got the same name as my late father).

As far as Tokyo goes, hey, the building is providing work for people. And if we get more office space maybe, just maybe, it'll put a dent in rent prices.

SF

Postby den4 » Wed Mar 12, 2003 1:34 am

I liked Asimov, and Clarke, and some Sturgeon as well as Lovecraft....and Clark Ashton Smith (although his SF tended to be more towards horror, like Lovecraft's.....)

Most of the SF these days seem less to do with speculative fiction like that of the golden age, and more to do with societal trends that affect the characters involved, to the point that it almost reads like the extra special effects in the movie that takes the place of the story.....

Bradbury was cool, in that even though the Martian Chronicles is outdated, the issues it dealt with regarding how people interact with each other and an alien species is fairly believable, considering how neurotic most people get when dealing with the unknown....and there was a sense of wonder that is lacking these days with the rapidly ascending attention deficit crowd....
try or try not...there is no do......
