Japanese developing unhealthy dietary patterns
Japan Today, Friday, November 24, 2006; TOKYO ---The white paper on diet and life warned Friday an increasing number of Japanese people do not have what it calls "desirable healthy dietary habits" such as eating regular, balanced meals. The government report was issued for the first time in line with the basic law [?!] on dietary habits that entered into force in July last year...more...

I´ve always wondered if ramen (without the tobacco, beer and so on) is actually fairly healthy.

I can imagine the "pot noodle" type of ramen is full of nasty crap. But what about the ramen from the restaurants, are those fairly healthy? I mean they´re just noodles with soup & veggies...

Dude, ramen is probably one of the most unhealthy foods in the world. High in fat, sodium, carbs, and calories.

Speaking of beer, Ebisu has a new one out now. I just picked up a Kohaku at 7-11.

I lived on those (minus the tobacco, but with extra emphasis on the beer and coffee) during my year in Tokyo & I can vouch for the findings...

Maybe the unhealthy diet will reduce their longevity and help thin out the baby boomer herd.

Instant Ramen really not healthy

Postby D. » Sun Nov 26, 2006 2:29 pm

My wife used to pick up some of the various instant ramens from a Japanese store here in the States. I used to like 'em myself, but once I saw the "nutrition facts" posted on the side (labeling requirement here in the U.S. under which the manufacturer must detail the food's supply of vitamins, minerals, fats, etc.), I swore them off. I found only one or two with less than 100% of the recommended daily allowance for sodium and those were still at 90%. Some were closer to 150% and every one had little if any nutritional value. Real ramen on the other hand, well that I won't give up. It's also high in salt, but at least its usually tasty and has some nutritional value.
