Ha.. that reminds me of an old girlfriend, she actually had a job blacking in sheets of paper with crayons. She worked at a famous printmaking atelier, doing work for Richard Serra. He'd set up a design, and the assistants would black in all the area with big oily crayons called "oil sticks." Then they'd wait a couple of days for the oily crayon to dry, and blacken them all over again. Eventually they'd build up thick layers of crayon. Here's an example. The worst part of it is, she was getting barely above minimum wage to make the drawings for the artist, and then he'd take all the credit like he did it all himself. And she'd come home every night with cramped up hands, griping about the tedium of the work (note that drawing is 144x168 inches, it must have taken goddam forever to ink it all in).
Don't laugh, these prints are actually pretty interesting when you see them in person, you can't really tell from the photo. And this was about the least interesting one I've seen, but it was the only example I could find on the web.

AsiaOne: Netizens slam NDP videos as Japanese TV ad rip-off
This year's National Day Parade (NDP) videos for its theme songs have sparked off some controversy online. A contributor to citizen media website Stomp, Daniel, felt that some scenes in the videos were copied from a Japanese television advertisement for The Children's Foundation. He said that although the NDP videos are not exact copies, some scenes, like that of a child painting, seemed very similar to those in the Japanese ad. Daniel said: "I think this is unoriginal and uncreative, especially for our NDP. "I feel that any national projects should be original and not recycle concepts already done by other countries"...Daniel pointed out that scenes like those of children colouring and paying attention in class are very similar to those which can be seen in the Japanese advertisement...more...

Autistic?

Postby Dragonette » Tue Jul 15, 2008 10:11 am

I absolutely loved the Japan Ad Council ad. It makes me think that there's still hope for Japan. Until I read the video comments I didn't realize that the kid is supposed to be autistic, though (is he, or is that a comment error?). I like the ad much better as a "think different" exhortation defending original ideas.

Here's a direct link to the NDP ad that they feel ripped off the ad council ad

Well, yeah, maybe they did, which really is ROTF funny/ironic - but the message isn't quite the same, so I don't think it's a big deal.

Idiots don't get jobs at the most famous printmaking atelier in the world, there are specific qualifications like a minimum of a BFA (MFA for some jobs). The wages might have sucked, but there are benefits. For example, the assistants get to keep the proof prints, which can sell for thousands of dollars, they're often more valuable than the main prints.

but they do it at minimum wage, but they keep the prints, but, but but... This is hilarious. The key words are "minimum wage" - image - evil capitalists with slaves in bondage waiting for communist enlightenment - the film pans the downtrodden proletariat, BFA artist masses - of course, in black and white, to give it that "realism" effect - maybe even silent.

you need to include a small dog barking in the background to indicate the masses begining to rise up against the evil capitalists....you Americans, you know nothing of fine French cinema...viva Jerry Lewis.

Does this mean that we have to pull old Marcel Marceau out of his grave for the only speaking line in this flick?

Last time I did white face, I used liquid paper...which, just for your information, has pretty much the same consistency as the stuff that they squirt up your ass for a barium enema. Useful information on a no-zangyou Tuesday.
