Are Americans able to work part time with the student visa?

Postby yakitori » Tue Nov 28, 2006 6:27 am

Hi All

I was wondering if Americans are able to work on the college or pre college visa? Have the regulations changed recently? Trying to decide if I should take a year off after I graduate and go to Japan or just go straight to graduate school. Dont suppose much can be done with a double major in Japanese and Anthropology and a minor in English except teach. fuck.

Or, even if you can't and still know a few short phrases, you can teach in some "schools".

I lived in Japan a few years ago and people on student visas were able, legally, to have normal part jobs besides teaching. I studied at KCP in Shinjuku for the summer as well and many of the Koreans and Chinese were able to have part time jobs legally but I am not sure if it is the same for Americans anymore since some of the immigration laws have chaged. I just want to know if it legal under the visa.

Well, no...and yes.

No one is allowed to work on such a visa as soon as they arrive in-country.

Anyone is allowed to apply for permission to work once they have the visa. I'm not sure if it is a fixed rule or not, but generally it is best to wait at least 3 months before applying for work permission.

You can work legally up to four hours a day once you get the permit and it takes about a month. I speak from recent experience. There is no problem with teaching either. I did it. Since you have a degree, I'm sure you can get a part-time job at an eikaiwa or two. But if you can afford to accept the lower pay a restaurant or convenience store is probably better for your Japanese.

You went to that piece of shit KCP? My condolences.

KCP ripped me off royally but I was able to get a years worth of college credit though my university for only two months of study. They placed me in a dorm in kanagawa ken---(kin)tama plaza. It was about a two hour train ride to Shinjuku each way. Is it just me or are there alot of chikan on the denentoshi/hanzomon line? anyways, I enjoyed my summer in Japan more or less. Thank you for your help everyone.

sorry to tack on another question to this thread but is there a nihongo gakko that anyone would recommend? I have heard good things about Kichijoji language school.

I used to live in Tama Plaza, wayyyyy up that monster hill. Was great exercise, lost about 6 kilos my first sweaty summer here. What way were you taking to Shinjuku? The express from TP to Shibuya takes about 25 minutes, and then another 7 minutes on the JR Yamanote....you must gone in the wrong direction on the Yamanote.:p
I heard the chikan incidents decreased substantially after I moved. Sorry if that was your ass I grabbed.

Hah. Your degree is like a boggle of mine: English major, minors in Asian studies (Japanese and Anthro) and Secondary education. All that learnin' so we can be broke for the rest of our lives.

I'm going to study at Saitama University in April and they said that this year they are "allowing" exchange students to work as English tutors for up to 15 hours a week. They also fed me a line about it paying something like $30 an hour, but I shouldn't believe that, right?

How difficult would it be to find a non-teaching job with minimal Japanese language ability?

I'd like to be able to work part time while I'm on a shugaku visa to make some extra spending money.
