Connect Mac to Softbank 3G via Bluetooth

Postby FG Lurker » Tue Dec 05, 2006 9:31 am

Have a portable Mac and a Softbank 3G phone?

Connect them together (and enjoy 30,000yen packet bills like me) using the information on this page:
http://pukupi.com/articles/softbank/

It worked for my Samsung phone, I suspect it will work for most (if not all) other bluetooth capable Vodafone/Softbank 3G mobiles.

You can do this with FOMA phones too however, the packet charges are a killer. Even if you have packet houdai plans, this only includes packets that you run up using the phone - email, imode, surfing etc and NOT packets that you use up if using like a modem.

We got stung by this a few months ago despite the sales clerk stating that it was all packets and not just packets from handset use.

Yes, the packet charges are very high and I'm going to have a phone line installed in Okayama for this reason. It's much cheaper to pay NTT's monthly charge plus FLETS ADSL and a provider fee than it is to pay Vodafone for packet charges to access normal email and web services. Not to mention that ADSL is far faster as well.

However there are times when it is extremely useful to be able to do a bit of work (email or a web page check) when you aren't near any other form of connectivity.

I carry around a little USB PHS adapter. Kinda slow at around 11K but useful for times like those you mention...

(Or just borrow some open WiFi network...) :p

Unfortunately neither work at my place in Okayama... It's on an island with no PHS, and since most people aren't crazy enough to take work out there, no WiFi either. Vodafone 3G works in some areas but not in others. It's fine on my balcony though so I can enjoy the view while I work. :D

Who can think of work when you have a view like that? Stunning!!! Beats my view of the neighbours garage wall... but then I can walk to my fave bars Shinjuku.

The island was originally my escape from work, but these days I don't have much choice but to take a bit with me. Not too bad though, an hour or two a day usually. (That's what lead to the MacBook Pro purchase though so it's not all bad!)

No bars on the island but there is never a shortage of drinking going on! :D It's an interesting place, the most un-Japan like place I have found in Japan.

I can't promise when (not next summer :( ) but eventually I'll arrange an "FG Island Weekend" -- Beach, BBQ, Booze. The 3 Bs of life! :D

It will happen, but unfortunately not next summer. Too many things all going on at once right now.
