Asahi: FOMA cellphone batteries at risk

NTT DoCoMo Inc. and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. on Thursday said they are recalling about 1.3 million cellphone batteries that are at risk of overheating and causing them to burst. The battery packs, used in FOMA D902i handsets, were ordered by Mitsubishi from Kyoto-based Sanyo GS Soft Energy Co., a Sanyo Electric Co. subsidiary. There is a possibility that the risky batteries were also used in some FOMA D902iS phones. The 1.3 million batteries were produced and shipped between November last year and May this year. Sanyo and Mitsubishi had the manufacturing process for the batteries revised in April after learning of the defects. No recall was issued at that time.
