FOMA P2102V Preview: 4x Zoom Video!

Postby GuyJean » Thu Mar 13, 2003 8:06 pm

After bitching about cell phones the other day, I dropped by the local Docomo shop today, and they were featuring the new FOMA.. Holy cow, I want one.

It's basically a video camera with 4x zoom and 2 lenses! It's even held like a video camera because the screen twists to the side.. Well, enough explaining. I made a short video of it:

http://www.TokyoDV.com/news

It's the top thumnail.

I don't know much about it.. But it'll be released on Saturday. They wouldn't give me a price.

I want one too :D I am going to get it, if it isn't going to rip me a new asshole in price :D

By the way, I am going to borrow this for a tech news site, if you don't mind :p

I have sourced you as well. Thanks for the links, I used them as well. :D that phone kicks ass! Just talked to the Vice President of my family ( the wife) and she gives her approval. If not, I would have vetoed :D

Thanks for the update.

What won her over? I have to do something similar on my home front.. Will you both be getting one?

I learned a lot from your site, but do you know the range? I was leaning towards AU because it includes all of Japan... Not that I'd really need a video phone in the sticks.. hhhhmmmm..

There is the area guide for Japan.

:D

We need another phone, so this seems like a good upgrade from my current Jphone.
:D

Also found out this phone is definitely bilingual, though not all screens will display in English:

Very cool..

I asked the girl what she thought it would cost, and she said around 30,000 yen. After I commented that the first FOMA was around 60,000, she said maybe 30,000 or 40,000. I think that's a low estimate..

My guess is 55,000 or so..

Are you sure it's released on Saturday!? Last I heard it was delayed. The Panasonic P2102V failed the drop test when the screen was open!!!

You lot may wonder how I know so much about Sony and Panasonic stuff... OBVIOUSLY insider info... I used to work for both companies :D

You could be right. She told me the 15th, but sales staff usually don't have 'insider' information

For example, it took her about 10 minutes to find out it's a 4x zoom lens..

I was playing with this model about a month ago.. (sorry guys but it is my job) has some nice features but I am not ready to swap out to FOMA.. mainly because the battery life is woeful. You almost need to charge it twice a day.

But I am still not satisfied with the screen resolution of the FOMA phones compared with the non-FOMA models.

The first FOMAs were only really good for door stops.. see this showcase

They have improved but still have a long way to go yet IMHO.

If youa re interested in Mobile stuff, take a good look at the Nooper showcases.. very interesting. Also Juergen has a site for his "portraits".

Juergen Specht

Juergen is actually a friend of mine - great guy and I love his photos. He really knows how to do lighting. But if you are offended by nudity don't blame me for clicking through.

GomiGirl what do you do exactly? Who do you work for?
Maybe you should send your comments to the guys at Panasonic in Kakegawa (where the P2101V is designed and built  ) They may well be cutting corners and using inferior LCDs in the FOMA models. Matsushita/Panasonic should know a thing or two about LCDs in mobiles, after all they produce 80% of all mobile LCDs, right!!!
