A burning question about napkins ...

Postby Samurai_Jerk » Sun Dec 10, 2006 11:54 pm

This is one that's been on my mind for years: Why do Japanese restaurants use waxpaper-like napkins?

Now that's a creepy commercial. That ain't no German folk song though.

Using tissues as napkins if fucking annoying because they just fall apart. But the ones they have in restaurants are even worse because they don't absorb anything. They they just move it around.

That's the original version of "It's a Fine Day" by Jane Fox (ex-Marine Girls) and Edward Barton (who wrote it). Opus III put out a dance version in the early nineties which was a big hit:

Ta for the clip Mulboyne....I just spent about 10 minutes trying to remember where I had heard this before...Her voice was sampled on Orbital's song Halcyon. I had wondered where sample was from.....

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by wax paper-like. Are you talking about the ones using a plastic mesh?

Generally and quality and materials used in manufacturing serviettes are determined by price first and foremost. Absorbency is more of a concern at the higher end of the market, so you ain't going to see great quality napkins in most ramen shops.

As you alluded to plastic napkins are not at all recyclable and the plastic manufacturing industry in Japan is seems to be blessfully unaware of all this. Dimwit once had the opportunity to work at a large petrochemical manufacturer who was producing a type of plastic that could only be used once, didn't biodegrade, couldn't be burned at any temperature without producing some extremely nasty waste products but was extremely cheap to produce.

Come on Mulboyne.

Aren't you going to lecture all us rustic colonials that that "napkins" are 'nappies' or feminine hygiene products?

As bad as Japanese serviettes are, the oshibori totally compensate.
