Apple Keyboard Controls

Postby FG Lurker » Thu Dec 21, 2006 11:10 am

I'm getting more used to the Mac as days pass by, but the horrible keyboard control situation is driving me nuts.

Pointing devices are great for some things but really inefficient for mundane tasks such as menu navigation. The keyboard control (navigation/shortcut) setup on the Mac has clearly been given little thought by Apple and feels like it was tacked onto the OS as an afterthought. It SUCKS!

Let's say I wish to access the Options menu item on the Tools menu. In Windows I would do this:
Alt -> T -> O

Done!

On the Mac:
Ctrl-F2 -> T -> Enter -> O -> Enter

It's twice as many keystrokes and Ctrl-F2 requires either two hands or seriously contorting one hand to make the combination.

Apple seems to want to attract Windows users and also prides itself on ease-of-use. The current keyboard setup will drive any Windows power-user insane and is definitely NOT easy to use.

Apple should take a page from Microsoft's book and offer real functionality via the keyboard. They've already lifted some things from Windows (alt-tab app switching), lifting another wouldn't kill them... It could be an option to turn it on with the default being off. They could even keep the current borked system and have the Windows-like functionality as well, much like Microsoft did with Excel when they were trying to attract Lotus 1-2-3 users (or Word and Wordperfect).

Ah, I feel better for writing this out, but it still doesn't fix the basic problem... Does anyone know of a utility that gives MacOS proper keyboard support?

Apple added a feature for users to create custom keyboard shortcuts to execute menu commands.

Go to System Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Keyboard Shorcuts

You will see a full list of the keyboard shortcuts already defined, with customized ones placed at the bottom. Editing a shortcut is as simple as clicking the box where the shortcut is displayed, and typing in a new key sequence...

It's not so much commands that directly perform actions, it's the menu navigation.

I've relearned a lot of the command shortcuts, although there are still many that I don't use often that I need to learn.

I'd just like to see some way add proper menu navigation onto OS X...
