They can have an effect on your policies. Some policies demand that you have these annual finger waves or what not. It's usually written in the small print, but a lot of them have these seemingly strange clauses.

I will admit you look better in the picture than you do in person. That is, for a fat fuck!

One of the reasons as a handicapped American that I live in Japan is national health care exile. :x

Japan's national health system means I get full coverage at the regular rate the same as everybody else pays. Depending on what side of the bed I get out of in the morning, Japan's national health system the ONLY reason for me to stay in Land-of-Concrete.

For my health insurance in the USA, almost every health care need I have is excluded the the dread "pre-existing condition" clause. Most US health insurance companies refuse me and that forces me in the "high risk" pool that costs me 1,200+ fucked dollars a month. In Japan, my "bad" health irrelevant .

BOTTOM LINE: Relax GJ, there's no extra charge for bad health under the Japanese national health plans (however, private/off-shore health insurance plans that some of the cheapo FGs use will start charging more for bad health).

I had the same thing happen to me. Had my annual health check and this time it was free since I turned 40. All the numbers came back great cholesterol, blood pressure, it seems my eyes have gotten better. The only problem was the f#$%cking BMI. Anyway I'm not going to worry about it, I'm just big boned, in more ways than one AK.

They do not take allowances for racial differences in weight and BMI. That is why you are being called fat and you are not by non-asian standards. Check on-line and you will probably be in the normal range - damn GJ - you are a beanpole compared to the national average in the US these days.

Yes, there are problems with the BMI, it's a statistical average and does not account for things like "big boned" skeletons or big muscles. Some people complain the BMI's recommended weights are too low, but I figure it is generally about right, if you're under BMI 25, you're at a healthy weight.

You might like this "Healthy Weight" calculator a bit better. It attempts to compensate for small-boned vs. big-boned frames. Ultimately, the better measure is body fat percentage, but it's hard to get a really accurate measure without a dunk tank to get your body's displacement.

BTW, I finally (yesterday) hit my goal of a BMI of 25, weight 195/height 6'2". Alas, the Healthy Weight Calculator says my goal is 174, since by their measure I am medium-boned (I always figured I was big boned). But I have huge leg muscles from so much running, I think I'll be satisfied if I can hit 185. You can see the chart of my 6 months of dieting and exercise, the jaggy lower line is my actual weight and the line above it (upper bound of the green area) is a smoothed weighted average. It isn't really so hard to lose weight, you just have to be persistent. It took a long time to gain all that weight and it takes time to get it off.

Thanks!.. I think.. ;)

Yeah, I'm not too worried about it; the important categories came back really positive. It's just frustrating when everything is fine, but because of the BMI, my 'overall' score is somehow negative.. I just worried that if I decide to pay for private insurance, they'd check my 'overall' score for the previous few years.. I guess, in Japan, 'overall' doesn't mean average..

Thanks for the input!

I'm supposed to be 165 lbs!?!?!? WTF? That's just the ego drop that I didn't need. 8 more pounds to go. Ok, enough with going to the gym 3-4 times a week, I've got a ton of chopsticks laying around that could be going to good use as a regurgitation tool. Thinspiration anyone?

I remember when I was explaining how BMI worked to my boss (he and I had both gotten dinged on that part of the health check). When I got to the part about muscular people having misleadingly high BMIs, his face suddenly lit up until I said "Yeah, that's what I told myself, too."
I have a blog. Last update: August 18, 2013.
